Wall of text incoming so I apologize in advance.
My wife and I have been looking for a sugar glider for some time and have purchased or made everything we would need (cage, toys
, food, etc). Any opportunity recently came to purchase 2 females (8 months). After some back and forth with the sellers, we met up to buy the gliders. The seller lived pretty far from us but mentioned that she would be near us visiting family and we could meet up a little closer (this should have put up a flag but more to that later).
Since I was at work, my wife ended up meeting the seller who had the gliders in a small birdcage. She said that the gliders seemed fairly nervous but she figured it was because they were being transported and in an unfamiliar surrounding. The seller said that they haven't been handled in a while which was part of the reason she was selling them and that they'll be pretty nervous until they get used to our scent (which we fully expected).
After my wife gave the seller the money and after placing the gliders in our car next to our kids (who were VERY excited) she seller nonchalantly says, "Oh, I think one of the females is pregnant. She'll probably have the babies any day now." With that she got in her car and drove off.
My wife was taken back by the statement and didn't really know what to say or do at that point. She called me and relayed the story and I was just floored.
This sends all kinds of red flags now as any reliable seller would know if their gliders are pregnant and would tell a potential buyer of that as well. She never mentioned this to either of us prior to us meeting and we spoke frequently before we decided to buy.
In any case, we're kinda freaking out right now.
We made an appointment with our vet
to have them checked out on Monday to make sure they're physically ok. I started reading some of the breeding guides but all of the information is a bit overwhelming. We would appreciate any insight or suggestions on what else we need to consider for some potential joeys.
