I got a year and a half old female glider to pair with my 2 year old male. The lady who I got her from said she was a lone glider all her life. I've had the girl since July 8th. Because my male is lonly I started swapping pouches and stuff last week. Well when taking a good look at the girl last night I'm fairly sure she has 1 Joey in pouch. My first assumption would be that I should not intro them today like I planned and wait till after the Joey is weaned. Is this my best option or would it be ok to intro them because she's not very far along? I've also emailed the lady I got her from, questioning this miracle lol.

Please take a moment to register so you can utilize all aspects of this site. wink

I would recommend holding off on the intros. It's entirely possible that your male will not recognize this joey as his and pull it. You'd be better off waiting until the joey is fully weaned.

If you are not planning on breeding, or if you don't have lineage to know the two are genetically compatible, you should take this time frame to neuter the male. That way he'll be all healed and ready for intros later.

If you want to keep the joey with the family, make sure you neuter any male joeys so you don't have inbreeding issues later on down the line. Dad will have to be neutered as well if there are female joeys.

For more information on breeding gliders, and rejected joeys, please take a moment to read up Suz' site.

It is really up to you. If you intro them together, there is a strong possibility that the joeys will get pulled. If your male is getting depressed and needs a cage mate badly, then you need to weigh out your options.

How do you know the male is lonely? What behavior are you seeing that tells you this?

He has been alone since January and lately he's over grooming. I don't want that to lead to anything worse. With the info given by the previous owner, How far along would you say her Joey is? I just want to get them together ASAP.

Just a couple of things. As Shelly asked above, please do register on the board so that you can take full advantage of what is offered here and so that you can continue to follow your post if it's moved into one of our other forums.

Overgrooming is just that. Though it's not ideal, it's not the end of the world at this point and to spare the heartache of possibly losing joeys, it's the best thing right now. When you say you "don't want that to lead to anything worse", I'm going to assume you mean self mutilation. Self mutilation is typically caused by pain or another issue, not loneliness. Give your little guy lots of love and attention, get him neutered and worry about intros once the joeys are older.

For This situation, had anyone had the same? Wouldn't this person be able to put them together and just monitor them?

Monitoring them isn't likely going to work. He could pull the joeys at night. It's not something that you can typically catch and stop.

The OP needs to weigh the risks, the pros and cons of the situation and decide for her/himself what to do. If the male desperately needs a cagemate, do you leave him alone until the joeys are weaned? Do you find him another cagemate? Or do you put him with the female and risk the joeys being pulled? Only the owner can truly make that decision based on what he/she feels is best for their gliders.

Also, to the OP, there is no way for us to know how far along she is based on dates. Females can be re-bred within 3 weeks of the joeys coming OOP. It doesn't mean that is when she was bred though.

Just curious....I had similar situation where I got two and found out one of mine was pregnant and the other was not a girl but a male, possibly father but not sure. I was told I was getting two females. Just checking to see if you got her from same person.
