i know i won't be in the position to get a sugar glider for at least another 4-8 years. I've been researching them for ages though, and they seem like the perfect pet, except for one thing....feeding them bugs...I know I can't be the only squeamish person when it comes to bugs, so how do the squeamish people here handle worms, crickets, etc.

Thanks

I was the same way when I first got my girls!! I used tweezers to get the mealies and feed them to my girls for a gfood month. Then I decided to suck it up and feed them to my girls by hand instead. While I still get creeped out when a mealies I'm holding is wiggling all around I know my girls love it.

I know how you feel I was exactly the same but you do get the hang of it. I feed mealies every day and I give them to mine using tweezers. The crickets I have fed are the canocrickets so are dead which isnt too bad. The worse ones I fed are the canograsshoppers ... oh my god they were huge, Im talking 2 inches here...never again. A lot of people dont feed bugs, it all depends on what staple diet you feed but either way if I can do it Im sure you can too. Well done for doing your research 1st cause ul be well prepared when you get your critters.

Welcome to GliderCENTRAL! And I second the kudos for doing your research well in advance!

I am also squeamish and couldn't handle even the canned worms, crickets, or grasshoppers. I made my Mom dish them out. But of course, it's a great way to bond, so I also bit the bullet and held out a worm for a treat. Now I can handle the worms just fine (even cut them into pieces with my fingernails). I only just recently got the courage to touch the grasshoppers. They are huge! I had to start by taking a plastic bag and picking one up with that first. Even though it was dead, I couldn't stomach the idea of actually touching it. (I keep the canned goodies in the freezer after I open the can, by the way.)

I just feel bad for the bugs!

Just remember, however bad it is for you, it's a bazillion times worse for the bugs!

I was the same way, lol. My daughter actually feed them their bugs to begin with, but after a while, you really don't think about it much or at least I don't anymore. Good luck to you and welcome to the board

Before I got my first glider, no one could have told me I would ever have mealworms in my house. It wasn't long before I had them here and about a year later, I started my own mealworm farm. If one touches me, I get panicky, ugh, but the gliders love them so much and I love to see how happy they are when they get them.

I cant stand the mealies or the crickets live or dead. I use a spoon to feed mine. Or a foraging unit.
I dont think i will ever get over the queezyness of handling a bug.
Cerian good thought there, never thought it like that and you would think with a child nicknamed Bug I would take that into consideration......but nope get the spoon babies want mealies.

Crickets (although I no longer feed them due to the risk of aflatoxins) are a favorite of my gliders. I DO NOT touch crickets. Well, live ones anyway. I would buy them and put them in the freezer. My gliders seem to like cricketsicles just fine and I don't have to worry about any escaping and chirping for days on end in my house.

wow, lots of replies , thanks for all of the answers and thanks for welcoming me to the forum . i will probably just use a spoon or tweezers or those thick gloves that u can get for doing yardwork or something lol. i probably won't be around here that much until i get my gliders in a few years, hope this board is still running then. I will be on here from time to time though .

Well I just freeze my mealies and then I don't think it is bad at all. It is a little gross but you just have to stop thinking about it and do it for your baby. Like Cerian, I too felt bad about about killing the mealies (I basically had to drown them in baby food every night so they would not climb out). It's so silly but I really felt bad for them. Now that the freezer does the work I don't even think about it anymore.

I don't mind touching the little buggers but I'm one of those people that, if it's breathing, I try to make a pet of it.
I DON'T feed them to my guys and gals. I just can't do it.

too funny, this topic that is ... i am squeamish too, i still haven't touched the mealworms by hand, i use tweezer, actually i got one of them feeder tongs, i use that for my bearded dragon, she likes mealworms too.. and i was going to use the feeder tongs with Bobuck my sugar glider but i thought wait, don't want to do that cause i don't want Bobuck to catch anything from the lizard, so i found me another tweezer.. just a regular tweezer, and gave a couple of mealworms to Bobuck... i have recently started a mealworm farm, so far two or three mealworms turned into beetles... hopefully eventually i will have well established mealworm farm that will keep my bearded dragon, my sugar glider and my rats well fed... my rats likes the mealworms too.. they go bonkers!

heck! even my rabbits like it too and that surprised me cause i wasn't expecting my rabbit to eat them .. see, he was curious about what i was giving to the rats, so i gave him one and he ate it!

If you're squeamish you could try freezing the mealies. I mean, they're still bugs but they don't wiggle.

I agree. Yuck! My babies love mealies, crickets, wax worms, etc. I don't do live bugs. I make my husband do it. Or when my granddaughters spend the weekend the six year old feeds the live things. She loves bugs. Yuck! I only do the canned bugs and then I have to hold my breath while I put them in a feeding dish and then put the top back on the can as soon as I can and then run out of the room to catch my breath. I admit it, I'm a weanie. I will however catch a moth if I see one and give to them. I don't mind moths. I'm hoping that I will get over this creepiness cause my babies love bugs so much and I sure do like to hear them chirp when they get a bug to eat!
