Has anyone successfully traveled with their gliders by airplane? How did it work (did you get to keep them with you, or do they make you claim them like luggage)? Any tips?

We are planning a vacation this summer and will have to fly. I don't think I can leave my babies here, but am just as worried about flying with them. Any advice is appreciated.

I don't know of any airline that will let them in the cabin with you. I have heard of people sneaking them on, but that's not something that I'd recommend because if you get caught, then you're sort of stuck with the consequences.

So, they'd have to go in with the cargo frown

Unfortunately, they cannot fly in the cabin in airplanes. And you most certainly don't want them to be checked as baggage. Continental and Delta offer space in cargo that is climate controlled, but my personal feeling is that in situations like this, with the stress associated with flying, you're much better off finding someone to care for your gliders while you go away.

Will they be ok with someone who won't be able to play with them or handle them for a week or so while we are gone? I do have a pair together, so they won't be completley alone. I may be able to find someone I can trust to feed them, but I don't think I am ready to trust someone to take them out and play with them quite yet.

IMPO, I think it would be better for them to be in the cage, provided it's large enough for a week or so with someone you trust feeding them and maybe change out water bottle once or twice while you're gone, (or daily if using bowl) as well as just check on them from time to time during the day. When you get home you can make up for "out of cage playtime" that was missed. It's still way better than putting them through a round trip flight, and then what if they're layovers or transfers?

IMPORTANT: Leave vet number, emergency vet number, and at least 2 if not 3 contacts for you. Have ready emergency vet expenses available in case your sitter has to take either or both glider to the vet for emergency care, better to be prepared for the worst case scenario.

Lastly, Enjoy your trip! grin

They'll be fine with someone taking care of them for a few days. It will definitely be much less stressful for them to miss playtime for a few days, then it would be to fly twice in a week.

I would just leave very detailed instructions on what to do. And if you could find someone familiar with gliders, that would be ideal.

I went overseas this summer and had a live in babysitter and although they didn't get out of cage playtime, I feel they were less stressed doing it this way. I did leave instructions on everything! See if you can find another glider owner on GC or somewhere that is willing to answer any questions via telephone if your babysitter needs help. I left funds and contacts, vet info etc. Mine did fine and I am sure yours will too.

Thanks for the advice! I can leave pretty good instructions. I have a special needs dog, so I always leave very detailed instructions for our house/pet sitters.

I think I'll just choose to leave them here. If we were driving I would take them, but I was concerned with the flights.

It wouldn't be a bad idea to create a little GC directory of people willing to help out if other GC members are traveling. That way we could have a list of people near by.

Yep - they'll be just fine for that period of time. I recommend having that person come to your house a few times before hand to get a good perspective on things and to become familiar with your gliders (and vice versa).

And I agree that if you are having someone new to them come over, just have them feed and that's it. Check, double check and triple check the cage doors each and every time they're there! Make SURE you stress that with them.

They will be fine while you're gone.
