Judie, Sundra was concerned because some of the preliminary findings on Jeepers showed liver damage. Now, most antibiotics aren't damaging on the liver-it may have to work harder to filter for a bit, but recovers fine.

The exception to that is Clindamycin (I have to be careful with Riker with it)-and that is because it has an alcohol base in preparation (think an alcoholic and Cirrhosis-hardening-of the liver, or liver damage-a glider's liver is small)-and occasionally seizures that will show up in the first dose or two if the glider is reacting. Either they will or not-if they don't, reuse isn't a problem other than caution because of liver effects with Clinda.
Clavamox, the 'cillins, metro are usually well tolerated and have minimal side effects. Sulfa antibiotics and Baytril have a higher incidence of adverse or allergic reactions in a greater number of animals, one of which is vomiting (which you don't want to do to a glider that already IS vomiting and somewhat dehydrated. In rare individuals it can cause fatal vomiting in animals even when that wasn't a prior symptom when rarely they are sensitive to it-I've had 2 that were). I have not read or been told by any of my vets bout liver involvement from those two, however.

Just about all antibiotics, including Metro, will cause at least temporary softening of the stool or diarrhea while the body adjusts to it. If severe, or extremely soft or runny past a day or two, change antibiotics.

Sundra-you know you have ALL my prayers for Peepers, and I'm so sorry you're going thru illness with another baby so soon. Call if you need anything, and keep us updated when you can. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />

Sundra, I am so so sorry. I would suggest subquing once a day. If there is an infection in the liver, the subquing will flush some of that out. You might find peeing more in the pouch, but is more flushing out the toxinx. My Stud is still hanging in there. He is taking Metro and Clavomox both. He has not lost any weight. His eating is sporatic. I am putting yogurt on his plate every night. He is eating it and two nights ago the plate was totally cleaned. He is still jaundice and wetting himself so we cut back the subqueing to once a day. He seems a little more alert. I was upset yesterday because the diarreah was not better after 4 days. I took another culture in and they found nothing. I know when Princess lost Gus and Meoquanee - one year apart, she threw up too. I gave her Clavomox and it seemed to do the trick. You can give her Metro and Clavomox at the same time.

Thanks everyone. I just left Peeps at the vet. She had eaten some yogurt, a half a cherry and a few morsels of watermelon (I went over to Central Market while waiting for the vet to get back and raided the samples in the produce section). I think she may have kept them down, except when we did the exam it stressed her out and she started vomiting again right before I left. Hopefully that will be a good thing because he tood the vomitus to look at under the microscope and she provided a fecal as well (diarrhea) for him to look at. They are also going to do an x-ray.

I haven't told my husband yet, but it's going to cost $400. That's on top of the $100 I spent at the e-vet last night and about $200 on Jeepers's illness. But you know what? Peepers is my baby, my bra baby, my first glider. If she doesn't make it through this, I'm not sure my heart could take owning gliders anymore, so I'm going to do whatever I can to find out what's wrong with her and treat it.

Sundra,

I'm really hoping all is well for Peepers. I'm sure your husband would understand. We spent a few hundred on my first glider that died and my husband never said a thing. He does warn people that think it is just a "pet" to play with that they take alot of love, attention, work, and that they are an expensive endeaver if you have health issues.

I pray all is well. I keep checking for new posts all throughout the day.

All my prayers, <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />

Sundra, believe me, I know how much it hurts when we lose them. I have been with 7 as they made their trip to the bridge-and I know no other glider can "replace" the ones we lose. BUT-another baby to care for can help begin to fill in the hole and heal the damage the ones we lose leave behind in our hearts. The pain without one at all would have been more than I could bear.

All my prayers are with Peepers, and I hope she realizes it's too early for her to take the trip Jeepers has finished. If she does go...KNOW that SHE knows you did all you could and loved her and wanted everything for her that was best and good in life. And that she and Jeepers would wait for you.

Please don't give up-I've seen gliders that actually died and been given CPR come back and live, as well as those that just couldn't hang on.

PLEASE tell Peepers we're all here for her-and you-and I don't want to modify another song yet. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" />

We have a diagnosis! Two, actually. The examination of the vomitus showed a lot of cocci and rods as well as neutrophils (white blood cells) and the examination of the fecal was 3+ out of a possible 4 for trichomonads (sp?) which are very similar to giardia.

So he suspects that the bacterial infection of the upper GI is secondary to the trichomonad infection in the lower GI. Treatment is metronidazole once a day(which we already started last night) and Baytril twice a day for the upper GI. He also gave her an antiemetic to help the nausea.

By the way, the x-ray looked fine. No blockages or apparent organ damage.

I gotta go pick her up now. I'll update more tonight.

Keep her with you and warm, hand feed her if you can and keep her hydrated. I'm so glad they found what was wrong. Also remember she's dealing with grief as well as illness-so the more time you spend with her, the better for her. Keep us updated as you can (but don't take time from your little one to do it). <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hug2.gif" alt="" /> You need to worry about HER right now-nothing else.

OH...ONE MORE THING. I know I brought it up once before, but feel it is appropriate now (and anyone who wants to argue may do so).

This is Peepers THIRD time thru this-and despite normal lenght courses of meds...it KEEPS...coming...back. Please go with a 3 to 4 WEEK course to make sure none of the bugs escape to come back later, and come back worse. I don't want to see either of you go thru this again. You KNOW you have the right meds beyond a doubt now-just hit this with them long enough to rid her little system of all of the cruddy little invaders.

And Sundra? DON'T do any board work until that little girl is better. You sit and watch her breathe while she sleeps if you need to-pet her and talk to her softly-feel the differing textures of her fur as moisture changes in it-but you get that little girl better...and DON'T worry about anything else until that happens, okay? We're here for you if you need support or help-but concentrate on your baby now.

Oh, Sundra, it's so horrible you're going through this so soon after Jeepers died. I will keep you and Peepers in my prayers.
I hope Peepers gets better soon!

I will start this post off with a NOTE: ONLY IN THE CASE OF A CRITICAL GLIDER will I offer the following. DO NOT use in a regular diet with a healthy glider.

Sundra-Gim vomited too, but could keep people food down better. Like I said on the phone...don't worry so much about nutrition right now...what you need is something that will help keep calories in her and will stay down for her body to use. I'm going to list some of the things that helped pull Gim through when he was critical (and No, I haven't posted this before, for fear someone would take it as diet advice):

Hawaiian Delight (Babyfood)
Fruit Medley Dessert(Babyfood)
Yogurt with a little granulated sugar or honey mixed in
Chewy granola bars (go light-only a little piece every 6 hours or so so it doesn't block them up-but can help with diarrhea)
CHEESE (He LOVED cheese! Mozzarella, Cheddar Jack, Swiss, Cheddar, Monterey Jack-whatever-just make sure no peppers, dill or other spices).
Ice Cream (vanilla or fruit sorbet)
Hostess Blueberry or banana nut muffins
Pine nuts (they're relatively soft-cut off the sharp end)
Cooked plain spaghetti
Macaroni and cheese
Small piece (1/4 inch or less) of flour tortilla or plain bread

If we remember anything else, I'll add to this list.

Thanks so much, Jen. I KNOW she's going to get better. I can feel it.

She's munching on a piece of watermelon in my bra right now. She'll lick yogurt from my finger too. She hasn't vomited since early this afternoon when I was about to leave her at the vet's. That was really a lucky thing that she did that when she did because the vet tech had just left the room and I was saying goodbye when she started heaving. I called to the vet tech that she was doing it again, and she came back and took the vomitus for the doctor to examine. She said it was a good thing I was there because she wouldn't have known that's what it was if she'd just seen it in the bottom of the cage. That sample told us about the upper GI bacterial infection.

She's in pretty good spirits now. Not lethargic like Jeepers was. She does NOT like to take her meds, but she'll just have to get over that. It's so good to know what we're fighting. I just wish we could have found out in time with Jeepers. I'm still not positive that she had the same thing, but I guess it's pretty likely.

Oh, and Mike didn't make a peep about the vet bill (which stands just over $700 in the past week). He saw how upset I was and said "Do what you need to do." He's not into the gliders, but he loves dogs and understands loving a pet. I'm married to a great guy. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/muchlove.gif" alt="" />

Continuing Jen's list of people food.....I know when my Sassy was really ill, the only thing he would eat willingly was peanut butter. Again, this is not something that is recommended for a healthy glider but it was important that they eat anything that they can/will when they are seriously ill.
Sundra you are married to a great guy. Give Peepers a kiss from me and tell her to take her medicine & get better.

Sundra-he says ANYTHING (I know he won't) and I'll quote vet figures at him that will drop him on the floor! Riker alone is over $3500 just at the vet-likely closer to $4000 but I quit keeping track (tho I have all the receipts). Add Peek, Babyboy, and 20 rescues to that figure.

You call ANY TIME DAY OR NIGHT if you need help-you hear? I truly don't mind answering even if I'm asleep, and keep my cell next to the bed at night (or day depending on my schedule) for THIS reason-EVERY night. You can also call the home phone (which is louder)-I don't go to work until 4 tomorrow afternoon, and get off at 12:30 am-I do have a lunch hour so if you need to, call and I'll return it as soon as I can.

And give that little girl a kiss from me and my crew. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" />

Just an update. Peepers hasn't vomited since yesterday at the vet's but she does still have diarrhea. They say it will just take some time for the meds to get the bugs knocked down enought to clear that up.

She didn't come out of her pouch on her own last night, which wasn't surprising with the exhausting day she had at the vet's yesterday. I went ahead and got her up around a quarter of 3 (I had fallen asleep on the guest room bed by her cage thinking I'd hear her get up soon). She did go up and eat some watermelon, then went to the bottom of her cage and "looked" nauseated, but kept it all down. I was just staring at her for about 20 minutes, willing her to keep it down and she did. Then a little later she went up and ate some more watermelon and did the same thing again. I went to bed about 4:30 when she went back in her pouch.

At 6:30 I got up to get the kids and myself ready and gave her her meds. She ate more watermelon and licked some yogurt and kept that down as well. We left for work about 8:00. I had been intending to bring her with me to keep an eye on her, but at the last minute I decided she'd rest better if I left her at home. I'll be off work about 1:30 so I won't have to go the whole day without checking on her. In fact, my house is so close to my office that I was able to go back by at 9:00 because I wanted to put fresh food out in case she got up again and wanted to nibble. I didn't want her eating last night's food which I'd forgotten to take out of the cage.

I took the fecal sample from this morning in to Dr. Tracy, the vet who doesn't see many gliders mainly for her to see for her own experience. I was going right by her office on the way to take my kids to camp. I haven't talked to her since then but I assume there were still lots of trichomonads in it. It looked a little red to me, but I'm pretty sure that's the dye from the flavoring of the meds. I told her to call me if she saw any RBC's in there that shouldn't be.

She spent the afternoon in my bra. She's been eating okay, although she got tired of watermelon. Scared me when she started refusing them, but she was happy to lick yogurt, PML and especially some sweet potatoes from The Black Eyed Pea restaurant, oh and she ate a yogurt drop or two.

A little while ago, she woke up and groomed herself in my shirt for a while, then started grooming me. I had dished out a regular smorgasboard for her dinner tonight: honeydew, PML, BML, yogurt, another touch of the sweet potatoes and a crinkle cut carrot. When I put her in her cage, she ate some of the sw pot, peed a lot (which I was glad to see because I've been worried about dehydration) and explored the cage. She seemed pretty zippy running around the cage. Then she settled down on the bottom to groom herself some more.

The only thing she hasn't shown me that I'd really like to see is a formed poop. She didn't poop at all, and went back in her pouch after a little while. I guess she just needs to eat some more solid foods.

BTW, I did as you suggested, Teresa and gave her one flake of oatmeal this afternoon to try and firm up her stool. I wasn't sure she'd eat it, but she really liked it.

So I'm crossing my fingers that she's truly on the mend. I think I can finally sleep tonight.
