I have read that it is good to give a female glider a break from breeding and I have some questions...

When would you give her a break?

For how long?

How is the best way to seperate a pair without causing stress since they are bonded to each other?

Thanks!

You are going to hear some differing opinions on this. This is *my* opinion from my own experiences.

When I bred, I gave my girls breaks from breeding - my reasoning...because in the wild, they do not have litter on top of litter on top of litter of joeys. We create a perpetual spring with consistent temps and plenty of food and protein for them, so some will continually breed if we let them.

I skipped the next 2 pregnancies/breeding cycles between successful joeys. If I thought mom still looked thinner than I wanted to, I would skip more.

The way to skip breeding cycles...the only way to actually do it with any consistency...is to KNOW YOUR GLIDERS...really, really well. While their cycle tends to be 28 days, it is not always clockwork. Mine were out every night and I checked on them every day. I knew when to expect breeding and always started paying closer attention 3 days before I expected it would start. Breeding typically lasts 3 days. When mine would start showing breeding behaviors, I would separate the male for 3 days. If you catch your pair mating, you can still separate, as long as you have caught them early (on the first day of cycle).

I skipped every pregnancy I intended to (which was several for 2 females). The only one I didn't skip that I had originally planned to - I was out of town and didn't want them separated while I was gone.

BUT - I was also always prepared to care for and place joeys in case I didn't skip the breeding. So if I had missed, it wouldn't have been a huge deal for me.

On the flip side of that - some people feel that it is cruel to separate the male for any amount of time from the female. In my experience, the females never missed the male, lol and ate and acted completely normally. (The males was all hormones, so he didn't eat normally...but wouldn't have either way). They could see each other and talk to each other, just couldn't reach each other.

Gretchen's response is identical to what mine would be.
:agreed:

I would also add that is certainly my opinion that the females should be given a break. It is important not just physically but mentally for them to have a break. Motherhood is hard on the body and on the mind. Having to constantly keep an eye on the joeys, them feeding and pulling and tugging at the mother's little body constantly causing some wear and a certain tiredness to set in. So no matter how young I do suggest breaks, in exactly the way that was specified above. smile

Thanks Gretchen!

I have a glider with two joeys IP now. This is her first pregnancy. I read that they can come into heat and be bred within 3 weeks of the joeys OOP.

So, I need to watch for breeding signs and remove the male for 3 days?

This will not affect the joeys since the male is the caregiver?

I do watch my gliders and I know when they are mating so that should not be a problem.

My own personal experience is that my girls haven't gone into heat until the joeys are about 3-4 weeks. At 3-4 days OOP it's too hard on the mom to separate the male, he is the babysitter so mom can go eat and exercise while he keeps the joeys warm.

Based on this....how would u ever intercede? It seems like they would be breeding at the same time they would need daddy's help?
Sorry for interrupting, trying to learn as much as I can.

I always watch to see that the male is trying to breed with the female when the joeys are newly oop. When I see that I'll take the male away for 2-3 days. However even seperating them I take the joeys and put them in a bonding pouch several times a day and night with the daddy so he can care for them while mommy eats and plays. I think it's important to keep daddy in very close contact with the joeys so he doesn't forget they are his babies.

Very often within 12 days after the joeys come OOP and sometimes before the joeys come OOP.

Because the male is only gone from the family cage for 3 days, this just means that during that time, you step in to make sure to babysit the joeys so mom has time to eat and play. thumb Don't stress over it all, the gliders will feed off of your stress.
