I just got a new rescue glider tonight and when I got her home I noticed her nails are super long. I also noticed her nails are thick, like instead of coming to points the are wide all the way to the end. I'm trying to get a picture but it keeps showing up blurry. Has anyone seen this before? Is it normal? She was vet checked before I adopted her and given a clean bill of health.

Hmmm...I haven't heard of that, but I'm sure you'll get some answers soon. I'm interested in knowing the answer also...

Are they still curving down in their normal shape, or are they just sticking straight out?

It's hard to explain. They are curved but just look like the beginning of the nail all the way down. All I know is she came in with 27+ gliders so in sure until the last few weeks has been malnourished, I was thinking maybe that has something to do with her nails.

Yes, it's normal for some gliders, especially those that come from sub-par care and less than routine nail trims.

Just trim the ends like you would any other glider with normal nails. As you trim them on a consistent basis, they may get better but some simply stay this way.

Thanks Aimee! You are always so helpful! smile I am going to take her and get her nails trimed today. Normally I would do it but I am to scared ill hurt her. She is so tiny compared to my other gliders she just wiggles free when I try to hold her in the pouch to trim her nails.
I'm hoping with normal nail trims and a healthy diet her nails will get better, she seems to walk a little funny because of the odd shape and length of her nails.

As long as she's walking funny just due to her nails, then things should be good when you've gotten them trimmed. Do so soon, though, because if that's the reason and her nails are really that long, they can curl and grow into the little pads on their feet. You don't want this to happen.

I did make sure none were growing into her paw pads last night. The pet store opens in 30 minutes so I'm going to take her when they open for her nail trim. They are really good with trimming nails there they showed me how to trim my other gliders nails.
I have a raptor wheel, but I don't use the trimmer track in it. Do you think it would be a good idea to put one in for her? Not to replace regular nail trims, but maybe to help shape her nails?

I have a few gliders with thick nails. They can be gradually shaped by carefully cutting a notch on the underside of the curve. The thickness can sometimes be scraped with a fingernail, and it just crumbles. Maybe you can ask the petstore about this when you go. smile

I don't think a wheel insert will help her nails until they have been shaped. The sandpaper will just smooth the sharp tips.

Gliders nails are suppose to be shaped? Do they prefer square or oval tips? French or sport cut?

LOL I don't know about their preference, but I prefer them to have a square sport cut! ^_^

This intrigues me. I get thru my nail trimming pretty quickly but they certainly get no sort of manicure. How do you manage to accomplish this?

I was messing around with her nails last night after they were cut and I put a little v in two of them and left the other ones that were thick. I'm kinda experimenting to see if regular trims, a good diet will change them, if they bother her, and all that stuff. Since they were all trimmed she is walking much better, but poor little girl fell off of me a few times because she is not used to having short nails. The pet store said they have seen nails like hers before mostly in rescues, and they said just to trim regularly and make sure she is getting a good diet. That is another plus for that pet store most of the employees are not pellet pushers and know that gliders need a better diet.
Thanks for all the helpful responses! smile

:rofl2: Silly girls! Yep, some gliders' nails need to be shaped, especially when they have been neglected for a long time. Check this out. This little rescue needed several manicures before his nails looked more normal.

grin

I'll try to get a pic of some of my gliders' normal length, but thicker nails in a day or two.

I think I remember this exact picture from when I asked this question! If it's any encouragement, our little Leela now walks normal (she had a very strange walk) - and her nail 'thickness' as actually gone back to normal on all except for one back foot. Just trim a tiny bit, even often to help the quik recede... we did just the tips about once a week or once every 8-9 days until she was normal. Looks great now.

Good luck, and congrats! smile Your glider will do just fine.

Yeah, you should have seen the huge open wound on the back of his neck. upset It healed beautifully and he went to his new home in 3 or 4 months. Sadly, he passed there, but he was loved and cared for. His name was Dallas. Connie/suggiemom1980 remembers him, I'm sure. angel

Thick nails in gliders can go back to 'normal' and helping shape them does help. Whenever I have come across nails that are thick or growing strangely, I clip at a severe angle back towards the pad of the toe. I have heard that notching helps in some cases as well (same idea - get rid of the thickness at the base). I don't know why, but shaping has seemed to help more or more quickly than just blunt cutting them, in my experience.

Nutritional changes/deficiencies, change in environment and neglect of trimming can all cause nails to grow like this. (Again) in my experience, the thick nails have tended to grow faster and needed more regular trimming than 'normal' glider nails.

Neither of my other gliders will even touch the floor, but Kaylee just walks around on the floor. I thought she had hip problems the way she was walking but since the nail trim she doesn't have the limp shuffle walk anymore.

I am going to be keeping up with her manis smile but now that I know the thickness is not a major problem I am not worried anymore. smile
