I read that a lot of people freeze their veggies (or buy frozen veggies) to feed to their gliders, since it saves time from buyng fresh veggies every day. How do you thaw them? Just leaving them out at room temperature? Would a microwave have any negative effects on the food, that you know of (other than accidentally cooking it)?

I just portion out the veggies in their bowl and let them thaw at room temperature. They actually like eating their fruits and veggies and BML frozen (as well as thawed). And because the pieces are so small, they thaw fairly quickly.

I wouldn't microwave any of the food. There's really no need to. I read in another post that it does have negative effects. Oh, Cycy, where are you?

I would think that eating food that was still frozen would chill them quite a bit going down, like eating ice cream does for us.

I also put mine in their dish while still frozen and by the time I finish cutting the fruit and dishing up the bml, the veggies are thawed. Think how good that icecream feels going down in this miserable hot weather!

Sometimes in the winter if it's really cold, I'll put the veggies in a colander and run hot water over them until they are thawed and warm. Kind of plumps them up too.

Actually, I live in Wisconsin, so for the past two weeks it hasn't been "miserable hot weather" so much as "a comfy 65-80 degrees." I do know what you mean though.

The hot water is a good idea, though. I guess it'll really depend on my gliders (I have at least another month before they come home, I want to be ready). If they're anythign like me, they wont like sinking their teeth into something frozen. It makes my teeth all cold.

Just be careful with rinsing your veggies (or fruits) if you have well water. You don't want to risk your gliders getting giardia. Taking them out and letting them thaw at room temperature really doesn't take that long. I've found if they don't want to eat the frozen fruit or veggies, they just wait and eat the BML first or play or nap a bit. In the morning, everything is gone. Their preferences vary on when they want frozen versus thawed, and when I put it out frozen, they get their pick.

I live in an apartment in a college town, so I'm pretty certain we don't have well water. But if we end up moving and getting a house out on the country, I'll keep that in mind.

The best thing I've found is just put everythign in their dishes a little while before they wake up and it'll be fine for them to eat in a little while. Mine will sometimes even try to pick at the frozen foods.

I let the veggies thaw out at room temperature. I put the gliders' bowls in before they wake up so the veggies have a chance to thaw out.

I bet you can't wait to get the boys from us? I saw that you were quite taken with the boys when you first saw them and held them yesterday.

I have noticed that Snuffie likes his food still frozen/cold. I don't know why though. But when I take out his veggies I put them in the Micro for like 10 seconds and then I leave them in his little bowl. Although they aren't completely frozen they are still really cold.

My stuff is cut so small by the time I make everything it's practically thawed byt eh time they get to it especially since they eat their worms and yogurt/bml first!

My guys will only eat some foods (kiwi of all things) if its frozen, and some foods (sweet potato) if its cooked. So check to what they like...

Mine like their veggies still frozen, they eat less if it's thawed - also - off topic, they won't eat their BML thawed, they want the BML ice cream

Pix: I am entirely in love with them, even from that brief time.

To everyone: Thanks for the info! ^-^

Katty, I missed this one!!!

Yep, Katty's right about the microwaving; 5 to 10 seconds of microwave use isn't that bad for once in a while, but if you're microwaving every time to thaw, it really does remove the nutrients/vitamins from the food.

I usually place all BML and fruits/veggies in all frozen about 15 to 30 minutes before suggies wake up. Sometimes they hear the cage doors and fly out to investigate, and other times they react lazily and check the dish at their leisure. Silly monkeys!!

I put mine in a cup of warm water while I get everything else ready. I find they eat more that way. They don't seem to like them semi-frozen. As with people, every glider's tastes are different.
