Feeding Waxworms - Help? #132260

So, we tried mealworms, and she won't eat them, even after spilling guts on my fingers as licky treats. She laps a little, pulls a face, and then ignores it.

We tried her with a waxworm, and she went nuts! She really loved it, and I was wondering how many can be fed, the nutritional value, and if they can be farmed like mealies can?

Waxworms are higher in fat than mealies so you really don't want to give them too many. I'd usually only give 2-3 of them every few days as a treat
As to farming them.....you should be able to since the bug places do but I've no idea how. I know that they are Moth Larva rather than beetle larva so they spin a cocoon rather than turning into an alien. It might be tricky after they emerge to get them out of the container without releasing moths everywhere.

Would I be able to feed the moth form to my girl, too? She goes nuts for moths, and if I can keep them in a fairly sterile environment I can let her catch them rather than swatting them and chucking them away.

They love the moths as well as the worms. Chris is right, they are higher in fat and from what I've heard can be harder to digest if given too many at a time. All of my gliders just love them, but to me they are too hard to keep. Wormman has some really good instructions on how to grow them and also sells the food mixture to give them which seems easier than trying to make it yourself. Good luck!

I'm glad you received help cause I'm clueless when it comes to wax worms. I'd keep trying mealies too, sometimes they can hate a food one day and love it the next. I also found that mine prefer live ones to canned ones <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
