Hi,

My name is Heather. I am the owner of a 6yr old sugar glider named Maywood. He has recently been diagnosed with pneumonia & having protazoal agents. Maywood was in intensive care four days. He was released back to us yesterday Feb,7,2013.

The medications perscribed for the above are Clavamox for the next seven days.
Metronidazole for 10 days.

I would appreciate any advice on what more can be done other than just providing meds. From what I understand, surviving pneumonia is not impossible but the odds are not in his favor.

Thanks to all that respond.

Keep him warm, make sure he is getting enough fluids, make sure he eats.

If you have him in his cage cover three sides of it with fleece. I would like to see the room temperature at 75 minimum.

Give him his favorite foods, avocado, cooked chicken (no spices), Yogurt regular, no artificial sweeteners.

Absolutely! I will call Val B as soon as my phone is returned to me, either this evening or tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks Mary

Kimberley,

Ive had him snuggled in my shirt since I gave him his meds early this morning. The house is warm but would a space heater close to his cage be over doing it?
He seems to be doing fairly well with eating just as long as its bugs & yogurt. He doesnt actually eat the chicken but he loves the broth when its been boiled with celery. Will this do?
He insists on burning up his exercise wheel. He was still going at it 7:00 this morning. I noticed he was out of breath so Ive banished it from his cage until he has improved. When would you say he can have it back ?

Thank you all for your advice.

sounds like you're doing everything you can to help your little guy pull through. Going to move this to Health & Hygiene now for you so hopefully you'll get some more exposure.

No, a space heater isn't overdoing it at all. Do whatever you have to in order to make sure that he's nice and warm.

If it's possible to figure out a way, I'd encourage you to get in touch with Val earlier today. If you absolutely can't call, send her a PM. Her screen name here is Jackie_Chans_Mom

I don't think a space heater would hurt if there is any possibility the room could get cold, but make sure he does not get too warm. Try to keep his surroundings at a constant temperature.

You can ask Val about the wheel, but taking it out for a few days while the meds work is probably not a bad idea. I'm sue he has plenty of other things to play with that do not need that much exertion.

Hope he starts to feel better very quick.

Thank you guys for asking about Maywood. He is still ill but making small steps to recovery. His 2nd follow up appointment was today. They want to do a CT scan. The veterinarians do not know why he's healing so slowly. They question whether or not he has cancer or heart failure. Possible problems with his teeth that could be provoking the sneezing... Ugh.

So many could be's. He has been on an antibiotic & we started him on saline today using a nebulizer. It seems he is responding well to it. We'll know better with time. Hopefully the worst has already passed.

Thanks to all for your advice & concern.
