I just got a female glider bout 3 weeks ago..shes alone right now till i can find her a friend, but my question is: She doesn;t seem to care for the suncoast staple diet food. i feed her lots of fruits and veggies...they are always gone the next morning, but the staple diet is alway there unless there wasn;t much fruit to eat. Could someone maybe help explain a little..i am thinking about trying a batch of the BML though..your thoughts would be great thanks..

Welcome to GliderCENTRAL! And congratulations on your new baby!

How old is she? Young gliders tend to be pickier eaters. As you noted, if you leave out less fruit, she'll eat more ZooKeeper's. If you were to switch to BML, you'll probably find the same happening. She'll eat what she most enjoys first and fill up on that and maybe barely touch the BML. If you leave out a large portion of what she most enjoys, she may not even have room for the protein source (if it's fruits she wants).

Try cutting back on the portion of fruits and veggies and see how it goes.

I have my babies on zookeepers as well. They really don't tend to eat a lot of it at night, but I leave it in till the next day, and they'll pick at it throughout the day as a "midnight" snack.

With any diet you chose to feed, if you offer too much food, the glider then has the choice of picking out what he/she wants to eat and may entirely skip important parts of the diet.

Some complain that their gliders won't eat the staple and others the fruits or veggies.

I would recommend feeding exactly what the diet calls for. Unfortunately I am not familiar with the Suncoast diet, but I would imagine they give you a recommended amount of fruits/veggies to feed. I would actually measure that amount out when feeding at night. Also, if it is a young glider, they tend to eat less than an adult so you may have to reduce the amount you feed to get them to eat a portion of each part of the diet.

Either way, it is important that the glider eat all parts of the diet or she/he isn't getting all that she needs from the diet plan. If you find she still will not eat the pellets, a change of diet may be in order, but I would first try using the diet exactly as the directions call for.

My gliders love their BML. I would deffinately say that it's worth a try.

I am on the suncoast diet too. My babies are doing wonderfully on it. Some days I can't tell that they've eaten their zookeepers at all and other times they eat only the zookeepers. I think that is normal. If you are really concerned you could give them the zookeepers during the day as a treat. Mine love this. You've probably already read this before, but just in case you haven't here is a link. http://www.sugar-gliders.com/glidervet-45.htm Just scroll down for a weekly menu. I have this printed and in my kitchen for reference. The vit. and calcium treat cubes are another big hit. They eat all of that. You just have to keep changing it up. They don't like to eat the same foods every day and neither would I. If you have any more questions on this diet let me know and I'll do my best to answer them for you.

We feed the suncoast diet as well and ours didn't eat much of the zookeepers either until I realized I was giving them so much fruits/veggies and protein that they were too full to eat the staple diet. Now that I've cut back on the other areas, they always eat most if not all of the zookeepers. Good luck and keep us updated

My kids are on the suncoast diet, and they waver over how much of the Zookeeper's they eat. I have 7 month OOP, 8 month OOP, and 4 years. Some days they eat none, sometimes they will leave all the veggies and eat all of the staple. I think part of it is being finicky, and sometimes they are just craving what the body needs. They will need about equal amounts of the zookeepers and the extras (veggies, yogurt, whatever else you are feeding), maybe a little bit more of the additives. So try getting it to the point where there is just a tiny bit of fruit left in the morning and she will eat the staple during the day.

Also, another part of the suncoast diet is to supplement calcium and the other one (I can never remember the names, repcal and ... something in a bigger bottle.) If you aren't feeding the supplement, she could be eating more of the fruit to try to balance not having enough calcium in the diet. I know I have posted a recipe for a frozen supplement treat I got from Suncoast, so I know it is in this forum somewhere. Suncoast relys on three things to keep the diet working:
- staple food
- supplement treat/additive
- extras (fruits, veggies, bugs, and yogurt in appropriate proportions)

I think that most any good diet, fed correctly, will be acceptable to the gliders but like any animal, sometimes they might not be in the mood for parts of their dinner.

My girls are on the Suncoast diet and they love it. I put Zookeepers out first. About 30 minutes later I put out yogurt or low fat cottage cheese and the veggie of the day. I wait about 30 more minutes before I put out the fruit of the day. If I didn't do this, mine would go straight for the fruit. I guess I put the food out in the order of importance. I think the staple is most important followed by veggies, calcium supplement and then fruit. It works great. I tried putting it all out at once when I first got them and had a bowl full of staple left over every morning that I had to throw out. Just think of them as kids that want to eat their desert first. LOL

Suggiemama, we had to do that for a while as well, but now that they've gotten so used to their zookeepers so long as we feed ALL their other foods in moderation, they will eat almost all of their zookeepers now even when we put everything out together. I even caught them up this morning around 10:30am snatching a bite of zookeepers. BUT, if I mess up and give them a little more of the protein or a little more of the fruit or veggie cause I wanna spoil them, their zookeepers get barely touched, so I REALLY have to watch my portions with all of mine
