I have read many sites that say gliders have to have bottled water because of the chlorine, lead and fluoride levels of tap water. I err on the side of caution but was wondering if this is true.

I use the filtered tap water from our fridge. Several members have said if your water is good for you, then it's fine for the gliders. Amiee was one of those and I respect here experience, so that did it for me! smile

i uae a berkey filter for gliders and us. it filters out flouride, chlorine, lead, and other chemicals and puts the minerals back in the water. we actually taste a differance between tap water and berkey filtered water.

The filtered or bottled water comes into play most if you are already concerned about your local water supply for some reason or if you are on well water or something, where contamination is more likely.

We had a notice from our water company last year that water may not be safe and they recommended boiling any water before consuming and then we got a notice that chlorine levels were going to be ridiculously high for a few days. During this time I went out and bought spring water for the gliders. Otherwise they are on city tap. thumb

I give filtered water because that is what I drink - I don't like the taste that all the "add-ins" leave behind.

I have always used tap water and never had a problem. I've been doing this since 2007. The only time I use bottled water is when I take my gliders somewhere there is different water. Since I'm not familiar with their water supply, bottled is safer at that point. Otherwise, its good old tap water here. smile

I agree, filtered or bottled water is mostly just if you know there is higher levels of additives in your water. I live in town and find the water to tastes strongly of iron, so i decided to buy bottled for my guys until i get a filter of some sort. I've heard if the water has high levels of chlorine their urine will smell stronger, but not sure if that is true. I think as long as you cant taste/smell any sulfur or chlorine, it should be alright. you could always let it sit in the fridge or on the counter for 12 hours before giving it to them, as it lets air get to the water and some of the chemicals evaporate, like you do when trying to make the water safer for fish in a fishtank. (atleast that's what we do here for the fish)

I live in a different part of the city now than I did 4yrs ago. Back then I bought bottled water for myself, my dog and bird because the water tasted awful. Where I live now has a different water supply, hubby got it professionally tested because he make homebrew beer, and it was rated AAA+ the best you can get anywhere even better than bottled water! So we all drink the tap water.

I live in the country and while my husband and I drink our well water I always worry about what's in it for my fur babies so everyone (except the dogs because they drink like fish) gets bottled water in my house.

I don't mean to dig up a topic that hasn't been used in a little bit, so I'm sorry if I'm messing up ;~;

I am a soon to be first time glider mommy, and my logic for choosing bottled/purified/filtered water is this:

Both my parents have sleep apnea machines, that require bottled/purified water, and I currently grow a pot of plants [venus flytrap, pitcher plant, etc] that have explicit instructions to use purified water also.

It costs about 50 cents for a gallon bottle of it here, so.. it's not going to break my bank to get some for my babies [when I finally have them home <3]

Personally, I drink tap water, as do our cats and dog, and they've had it for years, with no problems, but since gliders are considerably smaller, I'd rather not run the risk. [I'm currently obsessing over information gathering, so I guess maybe I'm being way to overprotective, or overthinking things too much..]

Im a new glider parent, and I use bottled water for my suggies and my hedgehog because they are small and more susceptible to spikes in the water. When I had gliders a long time ago, I used tap but the tap was decent there. Here my water in the tap here is pretty dodgy and I wouldn't really trust it. Me and my skin kids and my dogs drink it, but we are much bigger and capable of handling changes. Like Gretchen said she had gotten a notice that there would be a chlorine spike. I would be afraid to miss the notice or forget because of habit so I choose to use bottled water. It's cheap so I'd rather not have that worry in my mind, but then again I'm a worry wart. worried

It depends on if I happen to have bottled water laying around or not. If I do, the babies will most definitely get some, otherwise - tap water it is! They were use to filtered water before we moved, so it was a bit of an adjustment. Although, my gliders drink quite a bit of water. They will empty both (each cage has two) in about two or three nights!

Where I lived in MD we had good water, everyone drank it. Now where live we don't, so bottled it is for everyone.

Hi, Princesslinlin!

When I first made an appointment with my veterinarian, she went though a mental list of questions while checking my baby over (he was my first rescue)-- and after our q&a session she told me that I should only give Bandit filtered water. I should explain this was my first appointment with her EVER, and Bandit was my FIRST sugar glider.

She continued to explain the best water plan was also to provide a water bottle as well as open water attachment (to the cage for safety), and that I should replace the open water with fresh, filtered water everyday. This plan was to give him an option to which he wanted to use, and a chance never to get dehydrated. (Since suggies can get dehydrated easily.)

It could be simply for my area, but even to my tastes the tap water is strange. (I seriously believe I am that child from the movie "Signs"-- except all grown up. This water tastes funny! lol)

This is my two cents, and I still continue to do this every day. Bandit has two other friends now, but they absolutely love the open, filtered water; they drink at least half every night! And even still from the bottles I have set up near their food.

I give my babies spring water mainly because our city waters chlorine levels are VERY high at times. I am allergic to chlorine and sometimes cant even take a shower in it because of the high levels. So spring water it is for my babies!

My three have had tap water only for the four years that they have been with me and are doing great. We are lucky to have good water which the entire family drinks!

My husband and I refuse to drink, or give our human and fur kids, tap water. If we had a well, we'd certainly drink from the tap. But because of the chlorine and fluoride (mostly just because of the fluoride), we do the best we can to not use it at all.
If it weren't for that, I still wouldn't, because a friend of mine had her heart rat die from a chlorine spike in the city's water.
Also, if we had the water tested, and it didn't contain fluoride or other things of this sort, we'd definitely drink it.

We use filtered water at our house for humans and animals even though we have well-water. Our apartment complex is always doing something or other to the water, and leave us notices that there may be "sediment" in the water on certain days of the week. dunno

I do bottled when I have it that's the only time ill drink it if we don't have any then I don't drink water and I use tap for my gliders and cats
I wondered if it really matters though I mean who knows what could be in the water they drink in the wild?

A fish put in the tap water here will die (very quickly, super scarey). The water needs to be treated. In the wild they live in the canals, that water is just murkey but, not loaded with chlorine. I drink tap water and give it to the dog but, the gliders are just so little id be afraid to even try.

In the wild gliders get water from the fruits, bugs and other things they eat, but when they need a drink they lap water from leaves in the canopy.

It definitely depends on your water supply, some is safe some not. Here in MD, everywhere I've lived the tap was good water and safe for even small pets, fish included (although I'd let fish sit for several hours before changing, that's how I was instructed). When I lived in AZ, where I lived and worked the water was awful and I couldn't even drink it, so bottled water was used all around.
