Hello all,

I thought I'd share little Leela's story from the past few weeks. It all started when I went to cut nails one morning - and I noticed I could see the white of her right eye - which as we all know - really isn't that typical. I couldn't really see anything wrong until I began taking pictures - and got one that looked like this:

This is more than a cornea scratch (which is not uncommon) - it appears to actually be a puncture wound - most likely accidentally from someone else's nail.

We took her to a vet that day. This vet wanted to put her only on metacam and said that she had simply torn her 3rd eyelid, and that it would heal... though after talking to some glider pro's on here demanded antibiotics and picked them up the next morning (TMS). By day 2, she looked like this:

Things escalated quickly - I called this vet back, but they suggested I go to an emergency vet as they were closing in an HOUR AND A HALF. Aside from my issues with that vet - which is another story - I was able to find the most wonderful veterinarian I have found to date. By day 4 things had really started to escalate...

The eye then perforated, and the vet consulted with Dr. Walsh (one of the consulting vets on the emergency page). We were all in agreement to try TMS + a shot of convenia to give the eye a chance to heal naturally. I am going to skip to day 10 - as you can see the eye is shrinking, swelling is down - and we thought all was well.

The vet advised to stop the antibiotics to see what happens. This would make sure the antibiotics are not just masking a problem that is not going away. Sure enough, the eye swelled, and she went in for surgery 2 days later.

Thankfully the surgery went well - she had an appetite immediately, and had to wear this cone & be on pain management / antibiotics all week -

It kept getting better and better - and as of yesterday she is done with pain meds, and back in with her cagemates, cone-free! smile

These pics are from this morning:

And for the cuteness factor, this was her first reunion with Trixie in the pouch...

I don't have any questions, just wanted to share her story. She is recovering well, and we are very happy. Figure any information that may help someone in the future is worth posting. If anyone has any questions for ME - feel free to ask! Also, here is a link to the full archive of all photos / videos taken throughout the past couple of weeks.

Leela's Eye Infection / Enucleation surgery

Glad to hear everything turned out well. Plus you got a great new vet out of it.

She is so cute with those little nerd teeth.

What a cutie pie! I am so glad she came through this journey so well. She is lucky to have such a caring owner as you. smile

And yes, it is always so wonderful when people share photos & information like this. You might have helped someone out there who will experience something similar! After all, a nail in the eye could happen to any glider!

Just thought I'd post another update. Her eye has healed up so much better than I could have possibly hoped for. She has been so sweet through all of this, and is doing amazing.

These are from last night. smile

I just wanted to tell you how 'impressed' I am with Leela's healing progress. She looks FANTASTIC!

You have done a remarkable job with her, and I'm sure she would never have gotten this far without the love and care that you have give her through all of this. ((HUGS))

Leela is back to her normal self.
Does not seem to have any issues getting around at all. Just her old self - except we have totally bonded a bunch more through this whole trauma. She is such a sweet heart now (before she was a nipper at times - not once since the surgery).
