I have a little glider couple that I adopted, and now they have a joey who is around 6-7wks oop. The reason I received the pair was that they weren't handled ever, and so the bonding process has gone slowly. They now eat from my hand, and let me pet them, but won't climb on me. I'm hoping joey will be my real glider buddy, dad will be neutered, and I can just enjoy them.

Joey has just begun being out of the "nest" and its tail is starting to bush up, and again my calculations are 6-7 weeks oop. Also, he (I think) seems to be getting curious about the food options.

Is it okay to handle the joey without rejection issues from parents? Do I need to separate so he doesn't get bad behavior lessons from parents? Any guidance you can share would be appreciated. Both parents have been very attentive, and dad glider is always hanging back so mom can eat. it's been sweet caring for them. I hope I can enjoy this new one, more. Look forward to your advice.

thank you! -Tina

Hi Tina wave

welcome to glider central!! smile Props to you for being able to adopt this glider couple and providing them with a loving home!

To verify that the Joey is in fact a male, check the underside of the baby. If you see a small slit (pouch) it is a female and if it's no pouch, you have a male. If you want someone to be able to verify, you may post pics and we can provide guidance by the picture. smile With that said, yes you can handle the joey without fear of rejection. Definitely do not separate the baby from mom and dad. He still needs them. If anything, handling the joey make help to bond with mom and dad more.

Normally at 6-7 weeks they do begin exploring other food options. I know my joeys were eating on their own around that time frame. I love to see daddy babysitting while mom is out and about. It's the cutest thing and such a gift to be able to see.

Thanks so much for the encouragement. I'm getting him out in the morning for "us" time, so I'm heading down to play with him now. Usually for about 30-40 minutes. Again, I welcome any other guidance on handling this process. Thank you very much! -Tina

I start handling my joeys from the day they are out of the pouch but in reading your story that may not be possible. I my first glider was never handled and my second glider was handled from OPP and it makes a world of difference in how the joey reacts to the new parents.I bond with all my joeys so that it is easier on the joey to bond to the new parents. That said I don't separate the joey from mom and dad until 10 weeks.Congrats on the new joey.

When Will Gliders Breed?
Males: 12 weeks OOP

Females: 16 weeks OOP

Male joeys can become sexually mature as early as 12 weeks OOP (3 months old). At this point, they may or may not have their bald spots. Please do not rely on the presence of their bald spot or chest scent gland to determine if they are sexually mature.

Female joeys can become sexually mature as early as 16 weeks OOP (4 months old). There is typically no outward signs of a female becoming sexually mature.

Not all gliders will mature at these young ages. But it is in their best interest for us to presume that they are and manage them accordingly. Males should be neutered before 12 weeks OOP or separated from all females to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Females should not be housed with intact males at this young age to prevent unwanted or premature pregnancies.

Will they inbreed? YES!

Sugar gliders in captivity do not realize that this is my mother, sister, father or daughter. If a female comes into heat, any mature mature, intact male will do "his job" and breed the females in the cage. If you have young joeys, I personally recommend they be separated from their parents at 10 weeks OOP to prevent potential breeding problems.

If you have intact males with females, THEY WILL BREED

Great info. Thank you very much! While I waited to handle "Rocky" until about two weeks ago, I think he's coming along with bonding, and mom and dad are dealing better with it, too. I know I'm going to get neutering happening very soon now (next 2 to 4 weeks). I don't have a vet that with spay mom. I see a little nub on the belly, so I think it's a boy. Now, I haven't seen him eat solid food, though he at least licked at the apple yesterday. I also haven't had him pee on me while handling yet, so I thinking 7-8 wks oop. I saw him out (head in pooch) early May. I'm so relieved he's doing well. Time to go play...

PLEASE do NOT try to spay your female unless it is medically necessary. A procedure like that is extremely invasive and a bit too dangerous for a female sugar glider. Neutering the male is a simple, and non-invasive procedure and much safer. As long as the male is neutered, the female is fine remaining intact.
