My baby glider ( whom i just got 4 days ago) is doing great in almost every aspect so far- he comes to the cage when im near it tries to get close to me and generally is loving ..he is eating like a champ and active / happy

however if you try to stick your finger in the cage he softly bites on it once , twice and the 3rd time it draws blood.. is this normal is he testing?? or have i done something wrong? also he likes to bark at night and crabbs / l;unges if you try to stick your hand in the pouch.

any advice is welcome. criticism as well

more than likely he is tasting or he wants something make sure you talk to him before you put your hand in his pouch so you don't startle him

I would say this is normal. Its all part of bonding with them. Even the gliders I've had for a year will give me a test nip here and there. When it cones to nipsx take it. The more you draw back then more they learn that, biting is the behavior to make you go away. Crabbing in the pouch is something were dealing with one of our newest gliders. He is the first to crab when you even get close to his pouch. We have been giving him yogurt drops throughout the day. We sit our fingers at the tip of the pouch holding the drop. He will crab and then take the drop. We have been doing this for over a week and his crabbing has dramatically reduced when he is in his pouch. Definitely a technique I reccomend. Just have to show him you're not a threat. Remember you're building trust and its only been 4 days and if you gave him his reccomended space for 2 days its really only been 2 days.

Do you have a tent for tent time?

The nipping is normal. Gliders are natural sap suckers so in the wild when they lick something and there's no sap that comes out, they bite down to get more sap. In this case, you're the tree. They'll eventually learn that they're not going to get any sap out of you grin

As for the crabbiness when in the pouch - he's likely just startled when you're putting your hand in there. Or he doesn't appreciate his sleep being disturbed....lol. This also may subside in time. But, if not, you could try an open environment pouch to make him more comfortable and able to see what's coming at him easier.

The barking at night is likely him calling for other gliders. If he was just taken from his parents, or a colony, he's probably trying to find them. Are you planning to get him a buddy?

Actually, we got two a male and female at the same time.. from different breeders one 8 weeks oop and one 10 weeks oop. they are in seperate cages in same room as their wellness vet visit is thrusday.( and his pre neuter exam) figured since they both need to be checked , if one has parasites then both can be treated at same time. ( they seem very healthy )

That's great. The barking is probably just him talking to her grin

Congratulations on your new babies.

When you see that he is about to bite a sharp Psssstt sound will usually stop him before he chomps down and will let him know it is not acceptable behavior.

Also make sure you are not using soaps or lotions that are 'fruit flavored' as gliders may think your hands are something yummy to munch on.

They do outgrow the nipping stage pretty quickly though.

So my glider is doing the nibbling thing as well. I assume she is biting my hand because I feed her treats from my hand so my fingers probably smells like Yogies. She does not stop nibbling though and it is really starting to hurt. If she doesn't get anything out of my hand, she just bites harder. When does this behavior typically stop? I can't put my hand near her without her trying to nibble on my hand for treats.

That's normal. Some gliders don't like it when you stick your fingers in the cage or pouch. I read in a glider book, your fingers look like big scary things coming at them. I usually curl my fingers up and let them crawl out on the back of my hand. This is less threatening. I definitely wouldn't stick my fingers inside their pouch because again your fingers are scary looking to a small glider. Once they bond with you and start to trust you, you may be able to get away with this. I have two sets of gliders. One set will let me stick my hand in their pouch and the other set will nibble and sometimes bite to draw blood. Different gliders have different personalities. They are so much fun!! Enjoy your new baby. It's normal for your baby to crab a little initially. Put a piece of cloth in your shirt for a few hours to get your scent on it and then put it in the glider's pouch. He will learn your scent and start to bond with you.

I am so lucky with mine. He never crabs, he's very mild tempered. He even lets complete strangers pick him up (brought him over to his sitter, and her mom just snatched him up). smile
