This may be a very ignorant question, forgive me :/
Is PlastiDip safe for Sugar Gliders? I have a huge, super nice rat cage that used to house my show rats. I was selling it, but because of the small bit of rust on the bottom, no one wants it. My thinking is, if it's able to rust, it's going to without a doubt give my Sugar babies zinc poisoning. My husband said he could take it apart and spray it in PlastiDip, but the whole thing just sounds unsafe to me. Has anyone done this before? Is there a reason why we shouldn't? I plan to get a nice, big, normal cage for them, this was just an off-the-top-of-his-head option
Edit: The website does say, "Plasti Dip® does not contain any heavy metals, and when completely dry, is considered harmless." That sounds reassuring to me... but still, I'd like to know straight from you guys <3

If you mean Plastidip like those found here http://www.plastidip.com/ I have used both the spray and brush on, it forms a plastic or rubbery coating, it does not harden like paint. It could easily be chewed off. Plastidip peels off, even when they say it doesnt. I have used it in MANY applications and trust me it comes off, it is NOT a permanent covering. It also REEKS of chemicals when using it, so bad the warnings say not to use it inside. I would NOT use it. added: only surface I have had it stay on is on fabrics.

Oh wow Well thank you! I would have been distraught if I had ruined such an expensive cage. I wonder if there's anything else I can use to coat the cage, to make it Glider-safe? No one wants it, and I worked for so long to purchase it for my rats, that I don't have the heart to just throw it away.

I say if your hubby can take it apart and remove te rust find some paint that ( claims) to bond with metal and treat test it. but watch it really close until you cage comes. if it flakes off ( have hubby drop a bunch of nuts on it ( metal nuts) to check for chipping) Then can always keep the cage for a back up/QT cage if another glider falls into your lap lol

Most rustoleum brand paints bond very well to metal. You need to remove the rust, sand the area, and use a metal primer, then paint. Please carefully follow all directions on the labels of the products you are using. Rustoleum paints typically smell pretty bad and need lots of ventilation when using. But once fully cured are pretty durable if applied correctly.Do not know the safety factors though if using on a pet cage where constant contact occurs. Perhaps write to them and ask? When I had safety questions about a product I wanted to use, I went straight to the source. Be sure to explain the sensitivity of gliders and that the product will be used in a cage where constant contact occurs, food may lay on it and then be consumed, and there will be urine involved. They need to know as much as possible to give you the most accurate answer.

If you have a local powder coating company, maybe call them to see if they would be able to powder coat the cage.
We had a cage that was rusting and was able to get it painted by a local company. Good as new and no sign there was ever a problem, price wasn't too bad either. I honestly didn't want to mess with the cleaning, sanding and painting.
Good luck!
