Thanks again everyone! The 580 miles I drove
yesterday left me a little rum dumb last night.

Gizmo, after pigging out on BML, started learning
to eat vegs. with his new collar on. He did
quiet well last night. Most of the vegs ar gone
and he is sleeping like a baby in his new bed.
He did not crab or try to mutilate at all during
the night. It is 9:45 now and he is still sleeping.

Have a vet appointment at 11:30 and hate to have to
wake him. He is probably exhausted. Still have not given him any more torb. Think he needs to
come out of the fog. However, last night he
seemed very alert. He has a very sweet personality and was well worth saving.

When we started to put the e collar on him we
found that the size we had been using on Bo was
too small for him. Had to cut the inside hole
larger so it would fit around his neck. He is
a chubby little rescal. Gizmo and we will never
be able to thank you enough for your help in
saving his life.

I am so happy that both Gizmo and all the RR volunteers made it home safely.
You have such a big heart to take this little guy in. My prayers continue for his well-being and recovery.

Mary, Gizmo is such a sweety when I had him for 3 hours I had him , I feel so deeply inlove with him , But I think you knew that from us talking before we both left the dairyqueen..LOl If I would have known how to care for the lil guy myself like you do then I would have probably just went straight home with him myself you could tell he was very healthy besides the mutalting he had done ... such a precious angel and I know you will be bale to get him better and hopefully back to a normal life.

Went to the vet with Gizmo this morning. His tail
was completely dead due to lack of circulation.
I had planned to wait for a few days to have it
repaired, but when the vet discovered it was
dead, we had to let him amputate what was left.
He had already lost part of it from mutilating.
When we picked him up at 4:30, he was alert and
ready to come home. Mary carried him home in
her jacket so he would feel more secure. He sure
is a sweet little guy. Never gets upset, never
crabs. Do you think he knows we are trying to
help him? They ran a series of other tests and
could find nothing else wrong with him. Still
the vet wants him to take the Baytril & Flagyl to
be on the safe side.
This morning we ordered him one of the large
Wodent wheels, the wide one with the three large
holes. This way, he can get in it and run with
the e collar on.
We are going to keep him on a good diet, BML, for
a few days, and let his operation heal. Then we
will remove the e collar and monitor him to see
if he can have a normal life without mutilating.
If he starts to mutilate, we will put the e collar
back on and love and care for him anyway. He
has not started fussing or trying to mutilate
since we picked him up from Marsha in Decatur.
Strange! Keeping our fingers crossed. He just
finished eating five eye droppers of BML. Think
he is getting off to this hand feeding. Likes
being treated like a baby. He's so special, he
deserves to be spoiled a little. Will keep you
posted.

Hehehe, Marsha, you're not the only one that wanted to run off with him, LOL

I'm sooo glad he's doing remarkably well, but i think he knew since he was picked up by Sheila, that he would be taken care of well, and i too hope he will eventually have a very normal life.

I tell ya, if he ever has kids, i know i want one LOL

You all did great! You had him when he was going
through some of his worst times and did a good
job of keeping him calm. By the time we picked
him up from you the Baytril had time to work on
the infections and the tail had probably lost
feeling. The loss of circulation of blood to
the tail due to his mutilating was something
that none of us had any control over. It's sad
but something that often happens whether the
damage is self-inflicted or from another source.
Since he stopped trying to chew his tail, it
was probably because he had lost feeling in it
as a result of the self-inflicted damage to his
nerves and blood flow.
We are just so glad he stopped when he did. We
could not have asked for a more caring group to
have helped us get him here. Even though he is
with us now, a little part of him will for ever
be with each of you. And we will always be
grateful.

Gizmo started bleeding some last night. The vet
could not completely close the opening where
he amputated his tail because it was too close
to his anal gland. He lost some blood but finally
stopped bleeding. It was just a slight seepage
of blood but enough to be of concern. We stayed
up with him until midnight.

This morning when we checked him he was ok, but
started again when we got him out of the cage.
We took him immediately to the vets office and
they put silver nitrate on a spot that seemed to
be seeping. He stayed at the vets office for
another hour so they could check and see that
the blood had stopped. He gave us some silver
nitrate tips and I went by Petsmart and got a jar
of Styptic Powder. Been needing it for my first
aid kit anyway. Tried flour last night and again
this morning, to stop the oozing of blood. It
would not stop it. Just caked up and fell off.
Mary nearly had kittens when a piece of the flour
about the size of a dime fell off Gizmo. It had
absorbed enough blood that it just fell off and
she thought it was part of Gizmo. It wasn't very
funny at the time but now it is. Any way, we now
have him back home and the blood has stopped. He
is sleeping peacefully in his little bed.
The vet is happy, thanks to Gizmo he will be able
to meet payroll this week!

Will keep you posted

Oh gosh, i bet that was scary.
I sure hope he will bleed no more.
Please make sure you give foods that will help rebuild the lost volume in blood, though you say he hasn't lost much, but i would venture to say when he mutilated he had to be bleeding too.

I would think that BML has enough of iron in it for such cases, but i still worry.

Please keep us updated, as i'm worried.

Gizmo's tail stopped seeping blood and fluid after
the vet put the silver nitrate on that one small
spot. He is looking a lot better in the area where
his tail was amputated. We are still hand feeding
him to be sure he gets the proper amount of food.
Last night and today he has been sleeping a lot.
Think he is just exhausted from all he has been
through. Still not crabbing or fighting to chew
himself. From all indications, he is going to
come through this fine. If he continues the way
he is going, we will be able to remove the collar
in about 10 days to 2 weeks and see if he can live
without it. Here's hoping.

Awwwwww, i'm so gald he seems to be on the mend now, and yes, i would think he's sleeping more than usual, as he is trying to heal.

I can't wait to hear more about him in a few days, and see how he's doing. I'm hoping and praying for him.

...It's wonderful...he's beautiful...we are the happiest two people in the world...Gizmo is doing
REAL good...

No more bleeding...he is eating 4 to 6 eyedroppers
of BML 4 times a day...eating very good at night.
In the mornings when we get him out to give him his
meds...I feed him and we have playtime on the table.
He runs down to Charlie on his end and plays...then
he runs back to my end and plays. Sometimes he will
run inside my shirt for a second and then out on the
table and back to Charlie. When he gets to the place mat he stops and jumps on it...it is so
cute.
There are just no words in the world to thank ya'll enough for helping Gizmo. He has not crabbed
the first time since he's been here...or tried to bite. He really is Gods little angel.
The first 3 days he was here...my heart was so scared for him. I know I begged God a million
times "please don't take him...please let him live"....I guess he got tired of hearing me beg
and let him live to shut me up....
He has been walking with both back legs straight
out to the side and it concerned us...but this
morning on the table...he started walking normal
with the legs drawn in like they should be.
I just had to share our happiness...

Mary

It brings happy tears to my eyes just picturing him running up and down the table, feeling feisty and oblivious to the tail-less body I'm sure he's feels like he is in heaven now that he feels good enough to play and run and jump. The news coudn't be better and Gizmo will be forever in our hearts as he will in yours!

Whoohooooo, i wish i was there to see him play, and run. Maybe his legs sticking out was due to him trying to get used to him not having a tail to balance anymore ??????

But yes, i did see his determination to live, and maybe he knew he would be soo loved, that he hung in there just for that.

Please send a pic of him soon.
