I'm not sure where this question should go. I wanted to know if its ok to get fresh cut branches out of the yard and put in my gliders cage? I've read they like to tear the bark off the branch and it helps with making strong, healthy teeth. Please advise.

Check this sticky to make sure the trees are on the safe list. Then be sure no pesticides have been used.

Apple tree branches are always a favorite, especially in the Spring when they are budding, but anytime is really okay.

No sap trees shakehead

Some people like to put them in the oven on 200 degrees for about an hour to kill any critters that may linger, but I never have. I have always used that mangled ole apple tree in the back yard rofl

Thank you. I was wondering how could I kill off any critters. I read crape mrytles trees are safe for glidets. I have several in my yard.

Your gliders will have fun with the branches, but you will want to change them out on a regular basis because they will absorb the urine and start to smell.

I read pecan, pear and maple trees (except red maple) are safe wood for gliders. I also read you can have fresh leaves on the branches. The glidets like to strip the bark and leaves off to help pad their nesting box. Has anyone ever put fresh branches in their cage?

What do you need to do to the fresh branch prior to putting it in the cage? I was afraid tiny bugs would be on the branch. I dont want to hurt my gliders. What kind of branch have you used? Did you leave the leaves on the branch?

Yes, you can leave the leaves on the branches. If you'd like, you can bake the branch to kill any bugs. I've personally never done it, I put them right in.

The only bugs I look for are ticks, otherwise i just cut them and put them in.

I use Rose of Sharon branches.

Looked at the safe woods article and I've got a few to choose from: Pecan, pear, crape myrtle, mimosa, cottonwood, magnolia, and mulberry that I can easily identify and find in Sherman. grin Zoey, guess who's getting some fresh branches soon?

Just be sure that no pesticides have been used on or around them.

I don't use pesticides, so my pecan trees are safe and most of the other trees I've been looking to harvest from don't get treated. wink

I have a question through. Does it matter on PEAR trees if it's a fruit bearing tree or the fruitless variety?
