Hello my boyfriend and I are looking into sugar gliders. We have been toying with the idea of potentially getting a breeding pair.
We are doing our best to research the proper care of the gliders. We have already secured an exotic vet in Winnipeg who is willing to take us on (only one in the whole city, with one client having gliders). We are intending on building a custom cage that will be about (8ft)H x (3.5ft)W x (3.5ft)D. Also what does Het mean? Any help or advice would be most welcome. Our focus is on the well being and care of the gliders and want to make sure that we do all the necessary research before choosing two new additions.
Note: I researched the bylaws for my province and they are legal to have in Manitoba.

I see that you have really been doing your research. Here is a link to the breeder database: Sugar Glider Help: Breeder Database

Many of these breeders would be more than happy to mentor you about sugar gliders, specially if you want to breed in the future.

Good Luck and post pictures of your little ones when you finally get them.

I would highly recommend that you continue researching before you look into breeding. To save a lot of typing, I'm going to suggest you read THIS PAGE on my website. Please, please, please learn gliders and own them for a while before you look into breeding them. There is so much more to know and understand than many other pets.

Please continue to peruse the board, we have a ton of information broken down by topics to help find the information easier. If you have any questions navigating around here, please just ask! We are all more than willing to help out! smile

Thank you for the information page on breeding gliders. We have not decided whether or not we want to breed yet but any additional information is helpful. We are aware of the high possibility of inbreeding if not done properly as well as the other risks such as neglect, cannibalism, and inbreeding between father/daughter, brother/sister if not removed before maturity. This information is not taken lightly. This is why we would prefer an already established breeding pair if this is the route we choose to take. Also why we would not consider breeding if there was no vet in the area who can spay or neuter the joeys. We will not be selling any joeys who are not fixed for fear of irresponsible or uneducated owners unintentionally breeding them. We also have full intention of thoroughly screening any potential owners including viewing cages for the babies and ensuring that they understand how much attention and commitment is required to properly care for them. We are obviously new to this but we would rather only have two main gliders as pets and would like to make the decision as to whether or not we want them sterile from the beginning. Thanks again for all of the information, the link that you provided seems to be a very helpful resource.

Welcome to the forum. Congratulations on doing the research into these wonderful little creatures before bringing them home.

Just a FYI - female gliders are not routinely spayed because female Sugar Gliders have such a complicated reproductive system with two uterus. The surgery to spay a glider would be terribly invasive and the glider might not survive the procedure.

Neutering of the male glider is much less invasive since the Pom containing the testes is outside the abdomen and requires a minimal incision.

Completely agree with not spaying a female. You can read more about that HERE. (This is a new section added to the site for those that haven't seen it yet.)
