I can't remember which member, but someone had questioned about using the Trim Track from the Wodent Wheel on one of the glider safe wheels.

I had actually entertained that same thought on and off over a period of about a year. Could it be rigged safely? How would it work?

Well, I had broke down and purchased one with the promotion code from EN, and it came today.

I was first surprised at how wide it was, I had to trim it down to fit my wheels. I have two l2" Fast Track wheels, my first one has a narrower track than the other, because I requested a particular size so it wouldn't hog so much space in the cage. The other one came with my Ollie boy and is a little wider, but I understand some are quite wide and the 12" Trim Track should fit that width.

I also understand this creates a solid track and will get smellier/soiled more and faster than the mesh track, but..
I figured I'd only use it for a few days, then remove or switch out wheels for about a week before replacing (after thorough cleaning of coarse.

I was originally planning on using on the narrower wheel, because I thought it wouldn't be so wide, lol. But after trimming it down, I installed it on the wider track wheel. It wasn't hard to install, just took time for everything to dry after washing and then I removed the front of wheel. I decided due to it seeming to be mostly all sanded, I went ahead and installed it on the outside. I replaced the front of the wheel over the mesh and Trim tracks, and replaced rubber gasket to secure.

Here is a photo of it, it is now in the cage and I will see how it is used and how/if it helps file down nails. They're due for a trim soon, so we'll see. I'm planning on removing the wheel most likely on Tuesday, but if not too icky, I may leave until Wednesday.

I will post follow-ups on how it's working out, or being used, lol. I did have both Ollie and Lulu up investigating after I placed it back in, I guess I made too much noise and woke them. They both, individually got on it, but didn't run in as of yet.

Since the wheel wasn't real smelly today, I'm going to leave it in there a bit longer. They have been using both the experiment wheel and also the 9" travel wheel, I can't say to what extent they're using the experiment wheel, as I'm still not sleeping in there yet, maybe I should have waited, lol.

It doesn't matter though really, cause I can try it again after I'm in there, lol I just couldn't wait, since I've been wondering for sometime to see if I could get it rigged safely and then to see if it worked and how well.

I won't really find out the effect it had on their nails until Sunday most likely (hopefully), if not then Monday.

I found that is wasn't too difficult to install on wheel, as stated earlier. I had t trim it. But as I can tell so far, it was safely installed, I have not seen any indication of problems.

What I can say is I found that after 3 nights, it isn't really noticeably stinky, I did wipe it out yesterday, but haven't today.

I will post after removing to record how messy it was and how it was to clean it. I will most likely do this either tomorrow or wait till Friday (Thursday my mom is having oral surgery).

I will also post again, if in adequate time I can see how their nails are, whether or not. They're due for a nail trim, and I'm hoping to get that done Sunday or Monday at the latest.

The wheel was still not very stinky, I will either change it out tomorrow or Sunday.

I should be able to get to nail trims Sunday, most likely. I will get to check their nails to see if there is some benefit from trim track.

Hi!
I had asked about the trim track in a different wheel a while back!
The wheel I have is a 12" comfort wheel I picked up at petsmart. it is a solid wheel that was recommended by my breeder and I've stuck with it since my babies seem to have a blast running in it then grabbing the side and swinging around on the inside edge, plus the other recommended wheels cost too much to ship to where I am in Canada.
I have a question, how are the trim tracks supposed secure to the wheel? I assume since you put yours on the outside of the wheel you'll have done it differently than designed. I'm trying to figure out if I could place it inside my Comfort wheel and it would stay. I may use a couple dots of hot glue as I think I could peel it off when I needed to.

Thanks,
Raelea

I remember someone posted asking about it, and I had considered how/if it could be used on the glider safe wheels that most of us use.

I could have installed it either inside or outside of the type wheel I have. I simply removed the rubber gasket holding the front of wheel on and placed it on the outside because it appeared to be pretty much all sandy, I had no idea how that would be on their feet. After placing around the outside (I had to trim it down some to fit my wheel's width), I re-attached the outer rim of wheel and replaced the rubber gasket, securing it safely on the out side of the wheel. I'm sure if I would have done the same procedure on the inside of the wheel, it would most likely secure as well.

I still haven't had the chance to see if it had any effect on the nails, hoping to at nail trim time on Sunday or Monday at the latest.

As I'm not familiar with the wheel you have, I wouldn't know how to go about securing it safely.

With the wheel it's originally designed for, the track is designed to replace the existing track by snapping in place between the back and front grooves of the wheel.

A better knowledge of the design of the wheel you have will maybe help determine if there is a safe way to install it.

I can't see a good way to install a nail trimmer inside of a comfort wheel.

I just looked up the Comfort wheel, I'm not too sure it's any better than the Silent Spinner, which is a store bought wheel I've read some members have or still use. The axle on the Comfort wheel concerns me after reading stories about the Wodent Wheel issues with axles. I'm thinking you may be better off with a Silent Spinner if you cannot afford one of the safer wheels. I also don't think the trim track could be safely secured to either of those wheels.

I removed the experiment wheel today to clean it and replaced the other wheel on stand for now.

This is what I found:

It was not very dirty or stinky.
It was easy to remove and clean.

I probably could have left it in there a couple more days, but it's going to be very busy this weekend and I decided today was the better day to fool around checking it out.

I will post update on the effect on the glider's nails after I do the nail trims Sunday. I would think if the Trim Track did any filing on the tips, it should still be noticeable on Sunday.

If no results are conclusive, I will probably try again after I am more settled in. If the results show a positive result on filing the nails, I will probably use it every other week, pending how well the results are.

So, I did the nail trims today as planned, (yay, helping make things seem more normal again with some routine established).

The results regarding the effect of the experiment wheel using the Trim Track:

Not any difference really at all dunno Maybe they didn't run enough on the wheel, it didn't get as dirty or stinky as I thought it would.

Or, maybe the nails didn't reach the actual Trim Track very well, but I wouldn't understand, it appeared to be installed flush to the regular track.

Anyway, I may attempt another test with it after I get more settled in and have more opportunity to see if their using it. At least I'll be in the room and may hear more than I do now. I love the sound of the pitter-patter of their little feet on the wheel.

The good news!

My Ollie boy made me so happy today with his nail trim experience. Has some of you may have read I use a different technique than the pouch or fleece blanket method.

Which I have named "The Mealie Method" distracting them with mealies lol. They get offered a small dish of AYCE Camillies freeze dried mealies. With some practice tries, just playing with their feet, I've gotten Lulu and Skadoosh to let me trim their nails while they enjoy their feast of worms. Ollie, who I homed after this method was established for a while, has had a hard time with it and I ended up resorting to the pouch method (which seems so traumatizing to him, lol). Anyway, I always begin with the mealie method, each time managing to get two or more nails clipped before using the pouch. I have noticed small improvements on the last couple of attempts prior to today but today went amazingly well. He let me clip all but two nails. I got the first back toes on one foot done, then one on the other, he broke free and ran for it. I got him and calmed him down and he began back on his mealie meal and I managed to get one whole front foot and three nails of the other before he took off again. This time onto me, and my back. After giving him a moment to calm down again, I loured him back to his mealies and was able to get the one nail on the back I missed. He was so good! My girls do let me take a little emery board and file a little after the trim, but I'm not pushing that on Ollie right now.

I'm so proud of my little trio grin
