Yes, she can live disabled. Here is a thread for you to read: 5 years with Jackie Chan

The important thing is can she urinate and move her bowels? I would most definitely find a vet that isn't so fast to euthanize.

It could be HLP, it could be she just has some swelling that medications would help to reduce.

Please keep us posted on her progress.

Yes, she can have a life if she is not suffering any pain.

There have been gliders that have lived with handicap, please do your research. I believe Candy has given you a name of someone who had a handicapped glider for many years, after reading that post I remembered who it was and the story.

Just the fact that you have doubts shows that you want to keep this glider alive and have mixed emotions because you were told there wouldn't be any quality of life, but you still wonder. That, I believe is a good reason to look into contacting Val on the Sweet Spot, and at least give the glider the time it takes to get to talk to Val and then decide for yourself. You have time, you don't need to euthanize immediately, as there is no pain.

Thanks for the responses. It would be different if the vet had said "Hey, she's in pain" or something. We are work from home folks (reason we committed to gliders in the first place) and don't have an issue adding some additional care to make sure she can carry on.

1. Great idea on bathroom monitoring. I'm keeping her in a pouch all day so that I can see what she does.

2. She is eating and behaving fine. My 3 year old is her buddy and they were just eating breakfast together as usualy. (Apples, a meal worm and a bit of honey on finger knuckle for some bonding juice)

3. I did reach out to Val, I just did so at midnight so I'm giving her time to reach back. It was a bit late to expect a response early.

----

Taking to a 3rd vet. This one on the phone said that if she wasn't in pain, eating well and going to the bathroom that perhaps a wait and see approach would work. I'm set to visit this vet tomorrow for a final, final decision. All 3 have been sugar glider specialist with 2 coming from the database so I think I need to accept the decision from this 3rd vet and accept the decision whatever it be.

I would discuss possibly treating with steroids to see if it is just swelling of the spinal cord that will reduce the swelling.

I feel that giving her time to heal, seeing as there are no fractures on the x-ray, is the way to go.

I would lower things in her cage and give her plenty of fleece to cushion her in case she falls.

If she can't urinate or defecate on her own then she will most likely need to be euthanized.

Again, please keep us posted on her next vet visit and her progress.

My glider Zoey has neuro damage that really inhibits the use of her front legs and hands. Despite her troubles, she manages just fine, but certainly needs extra attention and love. When she has weak bouts, my vet has put her on meloxicam for a few weeks at a time. She's currently on it for an extended period due to some other issues and an attack accident, but it seems to help her a bit smile

Were they able to rule out HLP?

I went to GliderGossip and in his thread there it seems the little one started failing.

I am going to assume the little one is gliding free over the Rainbow Bridge.

Curtis,

I am very sorry for your loss. It was a accident please don't beat yourself up over it.

May you find peace and comfort in your memories of your little one.

I can't see the original post either, but I'm sorry for your loss. I know it isn't easy to lose a loved family member/pet.
