I wanted to get my girl a few new toys to keep her busy and distracted while she is alone. Im having a hard time getting them quickly. I have found many really cute bird toys that if reworked might have some great potential but, im unsure how safe this would be. Specifically, the wood parts. The toys i am looking at have "non toxic" uncolored spool looking blocks. Does anyone have any knowledge of them?

My thoughts were that my bird was so much more distructive than my glider is. she isnt a chewer. The colored beads stained my birds beak and feet, so i will avoid those. Also that i could replace the twine and ropes with braided fleece or plastic lace. This could potentially get me color coordinated beads, pre drilled bases and an idea. Like a DIY kit for uncreative glider owners. Any thoughts?

I've used bird toys, and some I embellished with beads and what not. If you can re-string roped areas with fleece or craft lace and beads that should be safe. I usually stuck to plastics with bird toys, with exception of bells.

You can also make toys rather quickly and easily as well, maybe even cheaper than paying for all bird toys and restructuring of them.

I am not as familiar with the colored wood, as I haven't purchased any such items, I thought the problem with wood was that it absorbs urine and will begin to stink. I have used the wood perches that come with the cage, I did use a fleece cover (ordered Reptarium pole covers). I alternated between two perches, soaked them in v/w and air dried in between use, plus washed covers and never had a stink issue with them. I have also used natural wood branches and also soak them in v/w solution to clean and they last a long time. I also know some use the wood bark you can find in the reptile section.

A few basic items and you can make some incredible fun and safe toys. Many of these items can be purchased at dollar stores. When using bird toys, look for safe materials for them or as you mentioned a way to replace an unsafe material with a safe one.

One thing that helps me is to look at photos of the things I'm interested in getting or making. Take a look through images of sugar glider toys.

I was trying to do that, finding toys that i loved and making them... 6 hours later i have a very nice copy of 1. Poor Xena. Though its probably for the best that im this slow.

I have a new appereciation for all of the toy makers out there.

Bird toys should work fine if you need something quick, just look for safety factors.

I'm pm'ing you.
