I've just acquired my first sugar glider from a family unable to care for their girl. She came to me in a bird cage which looks no bigger than 18x18x24, two bird toys,a hamster wheel ad ball, and a scrap of fleece they tied up to make a hammock. Getting her set up in a proper cage is my first priority. I need budget friendly suggestions for a cage and accessories. Money is very tight, but she needs something bigger ASAP.

Welcome First off, I would recommend removing the hamster wheel and ball ASAP as gliders nails and tails can caught and lead to injury. The fast track, stealth cruiser, and other wheels sold by vendors here are good choices. Also a major priority should be a good diet, but thats for a different part of this forum. I have the Brisbane Cage and it is more than enough for one glider and is about $150ish ( currently on sale http://www.sugar-glider-store.com/brisbane-cage.html ) depending on where you get it from. A variety of vendors on here sale toys and other accessories , and bird toys are more than likely unsafe for the glider to play with.

That's a great deal, total cost under $250. Getting the cage, a great wheel, and other accessories, great for on a budget.

Thank you. I'll check those out. Her diet isn't ideal, but it also isn't horrible. That's why I prioritized it as number two instead of one.

If you're on at tight budget, find some fleece and make some no sew stuff. There are some great DIY ideas on pintrest. You can make a lot of things out of only a half yard to get you by for awhile. Costs differ, but if you are near a joanns, look up coupons before you go, and it will save you$$$. Most fleece items use doubled fabric so you may want to get a print and a coordinating color too. Just plan out your cuts. Now to hook your stuff to the cage, I use plastic shower curtain hooks you get at the dollar store for a buck. You might want to checkout other toy potentals while you are there. Straws make great toys too.

It doesn't matter on the orientation of vertical or horizontal bars as long as no larger than 1/2" spacing. Horizontal may be better for joeys, but I believe many have gotten by with the vertical. The majority of the cages are vertical bars, however the Critter Nation or the Petsmart version of Critter Nation have horizontal bars and are huge!
