Help please! First of all, she's at the emergency vet right now. This started around 9pm when they woke up last name night. I have red light in the room and I saw something small and assumed she was pooping. I looked a moment later and it was larger and very moist, so I thought diarrhea? I looked a couple moments later and it was large, so I turned on the light and it definitely looked like a prolapsed something. I immediately called the emergency vet and headed in! I was shaking! They did surgery last night to just put in back in so the most tissue would have the chance of surviving. The plan being I would pick her up this morning and get her to an exotic vet. Sadly, my exotic office vet is closed on Mondays. She was doing well after surgery, but this morning they said she vomited blood. The morning vet said she felt a mass in her abdomen. They are still working on finding an exotic vet and will call within the hour. (Seattle area) Has anyone seen anything like this?? The only mention online of prolapsed rectum in a glider said it could happen after straining with diarrhea. But there hasn't been any. In fact, there was a solid stool mixed with the blood. I'm so worried. I wish I could have just taken her to an exotic vet in the first place. Should I keep dragging this out? Should she be euthanized? She is approximately 6 years old, if the people I rescued her from were correct that she was 2 when I got her. I think a big part of why I'm in this $500 already is that I can't imagine how this will impact her little furry life partner. I guess I would need to get another glider soon. So much to worry about. My poor little baby! Please help. Thank you.

Your concern is valid, and unfortunately I cannot offer you the advice you are looking for.
Here is a link to vets who offer phone consults to other vets by phone.
I would suggest printing or even copying the name/numbers of these to give to the clinic where she is so they can get advice from vets who have dealt with this.
Moving to Health & Hygiene for you now.

Not a good day. No good news, but I wanted to let you know what happened. I picked her up from the emergency vet ($600) and took her to the exotic vet that would take her since mine is closed on Mondays. She looked so pathetic when I picked her up. They said it was partly due to the painkiller she was on. She didn't seem to know what was going on or respond to me at all. I had called Val B. (from the emergency contacts listed on Glider Central) and she was surprised they had done surgery last night. She said that gliders who've had abdominal surgery had only a 5% recovery rate. I wasn't feeling very hopeful, but I definitely wanted someone other than the emergency vet to take a look at her. I also didn't trust the emergency vet to do the euthanasia. I had one of my rats euthanized there in the middle of the night and they weren't going to give him gas first - they were going to go straight to the cardiac injection because the said it was quick enough. How traumatic! The morning emergency vet had felt a lump in her abdomen. When I got to the exotic vet, they did an xray to check it out. It was in the upper abdomen and had displaced some organs and would explain the prolapse. Not sure what would have caused the vomiting of blood this morning. There was nothing to do but euthanize her. In fact, she never woke back up from the anesthesia for the xray. It seems so sudden, but obviously it wasn't. She had been eating and drinking and running around the room and in her wheel just the night before. I really wish I could've gone straight to an exotic vet and skipped putting her through the emergency vet and surgery, but it happened at 9:00 at night. I am certainly spending extra time with her mate. It's inspired me to take him in and have a general wellness check soon with my regular vet even though he seems healthy. I feed them HPW Plus (now called Critter Love) plus the recommended fruit and vegetables for that diet (and mealies, of course), but the vet mentioned that some gliders just pick out what they want and end up malnourished even though they are fed a balanced diet. We buried her outside the window of the glider room. I let Piff sniff the body first so he would know what had happened and wouldn't be looking for her. Poor guy! I'm going to make a separate post asking for advice about finding him a friend. I am very grateful to Val for being available to support me by phone. I had really been feeling alone and helpless in this.

I am so very sorry for your loss and all she had to go through her last hours, however, it sounds like she was mostly unaware of any of it once she got to the ER vet. Of that, I'm sure you are thankful.
From all you have told us in this thread, she has been ill for some time, and as we have learned, gliders are notorious for hiding what is wrong until sometimes it is simply too late to be corrected. This seems to be exactly what happened with your precious little one.
I am going to move this thread for you now. Again, I am so very sorry.

So sorry! What was her name? It is hard to watch them suffer. At least you were with her when she passed. Now she's gliding in a much happier place over the rainbow bridge. All the pain is gone now.
Dawn Be patient, and Trust your journey.... Grace Ruby Mom Dad Fiona, Dot and Stewie wish I could turn back time... Miss you
