So I know this is somewhat subjective, but I wanted to ask anyhow. We took in 2 female gliders as rehomes and they have a wheel in the cage already. Here is a link to what I think they have:

Link to site with description of image

I think it is the 11" Wodent Wheel.

What are people's thoughts on this one? They seem to use it, but are their better options for them? Any issues to worry about with this one?

Can you attach the nail trimmers to this wheel, if so does anyone know where to get those?

Thanks,
Phil

From what I've heard- the wodent wheel is A bad wheel to have and is extremely unsafe...

(Im going off what I heard...here)

so I'd get them a different wheel.

That is kind of why I was asking. Though I do see it as part of a package deal on sugar-glider-store.com, here is the link I am talking about:

http://www.sugar-glider-store.com/cocapaset.html

I am thinking that the person that had our gliders before may have gotten something similar to this package.

Oh, there are much better wheels than that one. I know some have used this type without issues, but it's known for causing serious injuries and even a horrific story posted with photo went around just too recently for me to get it out of my head.

Please get one of the safer ones, and you can use this one as a toy bin. What I did with mine some time ago.

The two linked ones are the most economical ones, but very good wheels and very popular. I personally have had only Fast Track wheels, and I love them, but the others are widely used and popular amongst us glider slaves, lol.

Safe wheels:
Fast Track at Spin Zone Global

Raptor Wheel at My Glider Wheels and more

There are also: Custom Cruiser, Stealth wheel and an H-Wheel.

To clarify about why even the "glider package deal" isn't that great; It does help prevent accidents, but to really understand why wheels without axles are preferred, you have to look at how gliders actually "run" in their wheels. I can't find the video right now, but they don't just run, they actually hop and jump from one side of the wheel to the other to propel it.

Thanks everyone, I will be looking in to wheels today then. I have seen that video of how they run you are talking about as well.

Thanks for the links, Terry had posted some also (maybe some duplicates) but I always appreciate the assistance.

Have a few things to get today as well.

Need to get a new wheel now as stated, which we didn't expect, going to get a cage cover, some more Critter Love Complete, maybe a new toy, something more interactive as they don't really have that kind, a travel cage and some kind of new water dish.

The previous owner said they don't like the water bottles, she actually has this in there now:

Link to web site for item.

But the girls have chewed on it and we don't want them to ingest plastic. We are hoping to find something similar but maybe in stainless steel.

Hey I suggested the Raptor wheel to you before and said that
the Woodent wheels were dangerous. Any of the 4 safe wheels
is a much better choice than the Woodent wheel.

Thanks Janet, I didn't know what they had with the gliders before Friday, and the sticker wasn't on it. Busy weekend getting them settled as well as normal stuff, so just doing more research today.

Phil, sorry, I just want to make a little mention here, now that safe wheels is the topic that it would be a great idea to have our "vendors" links updated, especially the wheels. Sometimes I don't have the time to search for all the links, so provide only one or two.

Phil, I would like to suggest a great source for serving water, safely and conveniently. I use them for water and usually for serving my CL Complete (or Plus)

Insight Clean Water Silo

They are super easy to use and clean. Here is a pic of my Lulu using the one I serve the CL in.

And speaking of the CL Complete (or Plus), I make up a batch and pour into little plastic bottles, like the little packs of Sunny D or any small plastic juice that has a resealable lid (even the cheap dollar store brand). I measured and marked them for servings for my three gliders when I had moved across country. I've gotten several more (7 total). A batch of the complete will give me three, 3-nights servings for my three gliders. I store one three-night bottle in the refrigerator and store the other two bottles inside a quart freezer bag for later, I like to make two batches at a time. When I finish off the refrigerated bottle, I place one from the freezer in there to thaw. The markings on the bottles help me to see how much a serving is, but I pretty much know by eying it by now. I just find it a little more convenient for storing and serving this way, it may or may not be for you.

I have two wodent wheels that are now retired. The first one I got from Pocket Pets and the second one I ordered when I was getting my second sugar glider and needed a wheel for the second cage. This was before I heard that these wheels are not safe.

I would definitely not use one without adding a glider shield to it. The glider shield is a plastic insert, similar to the running track, that goes around the axle. It is about 3 to 4 inches in diameter. This does make the wheel safer but not completely safe. The shield does reduce the space they have to run in and does not leave enough room for gliders to leap while in the wheel.

I have also heard of one case where a sugar glider got injured by the cotter pin outside the wheel that holds the wheel onto the axle.

All in all, I am happier now that my gliders use a stealth wheel. Raptor wheels are as good as stealth wheels.
