I'm sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

I have a 2 year old female sugar glider and currently she is living alone. I give her a lot of attention.(sometimes she is in my shirt 24/7!) But from what I have recently read it isn't really any good for them to be alone. So I have found a 10 week old male (not neutered) and I am very seriously looking into getting this little glider. Right now I am trying to decide if I should keep un-neutered and have fun with sugar glider babies(first time!) or have him neutered. I really want to have them but I don't want to kill any of my gliders.(know the feeling?)

Any advice or helpful hints would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you for your help!

If you do not have lineage on both of the gliders it is strongly suggested that you do not breed them as they may be related. Also if you wish to breed I would advise you to find a good mentor with many years of breeding experience to help you and answer your questions.

I agree with Kris, the gliders do need to have lineage.

Inbreeding can cause serious issues. Breeding alone has its own risks, such as joey rejections, joey cannibalization, the mother dying and leaving you with an orphan joey that needs round the clock feedings.

Getting into breeding isn't to be jumped into, you need to find a mentor so you know your on a good diet, that the pair you want to breed have compatible lineage and so much more.

Maybe I just shouldn't then because I'm the only one in the area that has sugar gliders let alone even thought about having babies and stuff.

How would I find a lineage of the gliders? Technically all gliders are related someway or another if we trace back to Adam and Eve... but I am willing to find out if they are to closely related. smile

Thank you again!

Where in Wisconsin do you live?

You would need to find their original breeder and ask if they're entered into the official The Pet Glider database at: http://www.thepetglider.com/

If they are you should be able to look up their lineage as far back as it is entered.

If they're not you can ask where their parents came from and try to trace them back to a glider that may be in the database. That may or may not work because there are so many unregistered gliders.

But I agree with Kimberley that there is much more to consider when thinking about breeding than "Are they related?"

I know I want to have a small breeding program one day when I'm ready but not just yet. I'm also fortunate to have a handful of friends with breeding experience relatively close by to help me. A good, knowledgeable, EXPERIENCED vet that you trust is also a necessity.

I live south of Milwaukee and my sugar glider came from Pocket Pets. There is a sugar glider vet in Brookfield that's about 15 minutes away. I think I'm leaning toward not breeding though. Thank you for all of your helpful advice! It is greatly appreciated.
