Deydrated, lethargic. For some reason he got out of his pouch during the day and wobbled around the cage. No vets are available until tomorrow. I have him on a heating pad (with some fabric padding in between so he doesn't burn himself) and giving him apple juice. I don't know what to do I'm really upset that I didn't catch this earlier. I'm so worried. Any advice would be amazing. Thanks.

Additional info: Luca is a neutered male, and he's buddies with one female named Miko. Miko seems fine, she's warm an alert when I woke her up (it's still light out).

Try to find a 24 hour emergency vet and have him seen as soon as possible. Dehydration is a symptom that something is going on that needs treatment. Any vet can give sub-Q fluids to deal with the dehydration.

If his breathing is labored and his nose is purple - he is not moving air well through his lungs and needs medical care NOW.

Try putting him in a pouch and keeping him on you rather than on a heating pad. The heat will only make him more lethargic and may also contribute to the dehydration.

Until you can get him to the vet keep offering fluids frequently through out the night if necessary - but do not force liquids into his mouth - he could aspirate the liquid into his lungs because he is already having difficulty breathing.

Thank you so much... I called the 24hr emergency vet number that my original vet gave me for my suggies and the vet on duty apparently can't see sugar gliders... I live in a fairly small town and there aren't very many choices, but when I originally got them there /was/ one very good sugar glider vet here. He moved to a different town to be a vet at the zoo. Anyway I'll call up the emergency vet again and ask about sub-Q fluids

Don't call just pack him up and go. Any vet can figure out how much to subQ your little one with.

I am moving this to Health & Hygiene, please keep us posted on your little one.

This is the only vet I found for Montana: Bozeman, MT Vet Listing: Animal Medical Center

He doesn't see emergencies in the evening, BUT, he will do status checks and collaboration with the local pet emergency center.

Please go to the emergency vet and take this information with you.

@Feather: I /wish/ Dr. Klapake was still here. He was an amazing vet, and I'm pretty sure I wrote one of those reviews on that website. Unfortunately that information is old. That's the original vet I mentioned in my second post that moved quite far away to work at a zoo.

I called the pet emergency center again (because I didn't see your message before you told me to just pack up and go) and they were able to give me the cell number of the lady vet who sees sugar gliders in the area now. She said she wasn't available to see him tonight but gave me some advice. She basically told me to do the things I was already doing: offering fluids frequently, using a heating pad, and keeping a close eye on him. She said I should call her cell phone or office in the morning.

She also said this might be just Luca getting old? As far as I know he's only 6 but I adopted him from a lady who was just giving away her sugar gliders and had no idea what she was talking about (for one thing, she said she was giving me two females and when I got home and looked at them it was /really/ obvious one of them was not female), so I don't really know how old he is at all, besides that I've had him for 5 years and the original vet assumed he was fairly young when I got him.

I will look in to getting the correct information added to the Sugar Glider Help vet directory, but if you know how I can do this before I figure it out that'd be great if you could let me know.

I am so sorry for your loss.

Having the vet do a necropsy would be the only way to know exactly what caused your little guy's death.

It would be a good idea to have Miko checked out to make sure she is healthy.

You will need to give her as much time and attention as you can as she adjusts to being alone.

I'm sorry for your loss. Make sure Miko doesn't have any sickness because gliders are very good at hiding their sicknesses.

OMG I just happened to be browsing when I saw this. I'm so sorry, Takaia. frown Sending you hugs. There wasn't anything you could have done. It could've been something from before you got him, poor past diet or him being older than you thought. You gave him a great life and he was lucky to have you. <3

For future reference - AMC doesn't see suggies at all anymore. They referred me to Allwest vet and I really like them. The vet I see might be the same lady vet that you talked to, but I thought she was very good. That's weird about the ER not seeing him... they admitted Fevy but that was a few years ago. At the time, the ER vet told me he personally didn't know anything about gliders but he was willing to work with Dr. K on call and do basic stuff like Sub Q fluids and oxygen and drug administration and stuff. Just he couldn't advise beyond that in terms of medical problems.

Anyways... I'm so sorry. frown If Miko is in need of a friend, I saw a craigslist post about a month ago from someone near Bozeman who needed to rehome some suggies. Fevy sends his condolences... I think despite his grumbling, he liked Luca deep down.
