I have a pair of sugar gliders who were put together three summers ago. She was around a year old and he was six months old. It took them a couple months to figure out mating but have been an active couple ever since but have never produced a family. She is carrying weight around her pouches lately and been a little noisy/ active in their pouch this week. He has seemed a touch more interest in her pouch I think the last couple weeks and she's also seems more interested in her pouch since their last mating session but I may be noticing it because of my curiosity in the weight she's carrying in her pouch. Can she be pregnant after all this time of not producing? I'm afraid to touch her pouch as it would be to early and I wouldn't want to dislodge a baby if she is.

Yes, it is possible.

We had a member here years ago with a pair who were definitely middle aged if not a tad beyond, the male was intact yet they had never produced any joeys. Low and behold, she posted that she finally had her miracle joeys as she had given up hope of their ever producing. To my knowledge, those were the only joeys the pair ever had.

It is unusual for gliders or any animal, I suppose, not to reproduce, but there are some who live together in harmony (just like humans) yet for whatever reason, things just don't align properly. OR it is possible the joeys make it to the pouch but something happens before they were big enough for you to notice, and you would never know they were even there as the parents would dispose of the deceased ones.

Keep watching her pouch and just keep doing things exactly the same as you always do. Most of us offer extra food when we know for sure mom is carrying and especially once we know for sure as she needs to produce enough milk for those hungry little joeys grin

Karen is right, they can raise joeys after not having any for a while.

Tucker was with T'Pol for well over a year before they produced any joeys and they were a year old when I introduced them.

Thank you both for replying. I had given up on them being a pair that could produce a family. I'm excited and nervous to see if she truly is pregnant.

If anyone is interested in an update. It's been a little over three years since my female and male met each other, and I had given up on them creating life. My female is definitely pregnant. She does what I call the cage wiggle her pouch is getting big enough to affect her walk, her pouch opening isn't as sealed together and there is a slight browning around the area like I had read about. I'm afraid to do a thorough joey bump feel as I want to support their health. I believe she's carrying two joeys from the looks of it. She gets much bigger, I'll be seeing body parts for sure.

This is so exciting, and you are correct, you may indeed see body parts protruding from her pouch before you see the whole joey. You must be on cloud9

After these joeys, depending on whether you keep the male intact, they may or may not produce more.

Just enjoy these as I know you will.

And for sure post lots of pictures

So I'm suspecting she has joeys around 4 weeks ip now. She can't run on their wheel as fast as she use to with the cowboy walk she's doing and they spend more time in their sleeping pouch throughout the evening then they use to. I don't know if I'm feeling anything as I'm afraid to touch too hard. She immediately will go to her partner after I'm done petting her and rub his bald spots all over her. He sings to the pouch and also has a desire to make sure his scent is on her pouch opening. Both have become even bigger sweethearts. It's so incedibly cool being witness to all these changes.

I am going through the same thing right now with my furballs smile This is my first time experiencing a glider pregnancy! I was lucky enough to witness the birth and yesterday the joey was officially in pouch for 1 week. My female is hand tame so she doesn't have a problem with me looking. I can't see a bump or feel anything yet, but I've only very gently touched the pouch like you because I don't want to accidentally dislodge the joey from the nipple. My female has been singing every night, and just like yours she's been spending more time sleeping in the pouch. The funny thing is, she's always been crabby. Not scared crabby, but if you bumped her pouch while she was sleeping she would be sure to let you know she wasn't happy about it lol. Now it's like she is so quiet and calm, nothing seems to bother her. So neat to see these changes! Good luck with your gliders and I can't wait to see pictures if you post them! smile
