I took my family to the state fair in Albuquerque. I was told to check out the Sugar Bears at the fair because people know that I have gliders and wanted to know what I knew about these sugar bear dealers so I had seen the demo before because my husband had bought Boo after we saw it (not from them). This is the first time I had really paid attention to the information that was in the demo. There were a few inaccuracies. Is the owner of the company that sells these little guys aware of the inaccuracies ? or have his sales peoples gotten away from them?

They were her in Salt Lake City Utah also at our fair. There was a single glider that was so stressed being passed from person to person, she was trying as quick as she could to get in any pouch or pocket you could tell she was miserable. And the cages were terrible the size of traveling cages. I didn't have the heart to stay and listen to their spewl after seeing the way they were treating her so I couldn't tell you if they were passing on inaccurate or accurate info.

I've seen videos of sugar gliders dying of "usage", handling too much and causing a tremendous amount of stress. Are you talking about Pocket Pets? Because what I've read, they spew misinformation to sell the sugar gliders. They are the puppy mill of sugar gliders.

That's horrible, I never heard of a glider being handled to death. I don't like the information they give out. I did talk to a few people in the crowd and gave them this web site information.

It pains me to see these things about PP, since they're where I got my gliders from...I didn't realize they were a mill, and the person I was speaking to from them was so friendly and his glider seemed to trust him, so I didn't think of looking up the company! Part of the reason I joined this site was because of the things I saw on here about PP, and I wanted to do as much as I could to make sure that I'd treat them right now that I had them.
Some of the things they say don't seem to be right, for instance they tell you to press hard on the pouch when they're crabbing. It does make them stop, but they tend to start right back up again once you release the pressure. I got better results when I took some advice I saw on here and started petting my boy through the pouch instead, he calmed down a lot quicker then and didn't resume crabbing.
And of course, they stress for you not to trust anything you read online. Nevermind that they have a few sites themselves. tounge

That's who was in Utah was Pocket Pets. My son was funny he said are those different their sugar bears not gliders? Because they advertise them as that. I wanted so bad to bring a couple home the demo glider ecspecially I had to stop myself

They call them sugar bears because they own every sugar bear domain name there is and when you google "sugar bear" it takes you right to their web sites.

Yes that is who it is. I think they also know that vet on the U tube videos who advised to squeeze the joey in your hand when they crab Boo Tried to take off my fingers when I cupped her and squeezed that's what lead me here several years ago.Boo still hates to be "cupped"

I just want to remind everyone, Pocket Pets is not the only company or venue that call sugar gliders "Sugar Bears". There are several others that have picked that name up as well when they realized how well it helped them sell for Pocket Pets.

I would like to see these videos. I have never heard of a glider dying from being over handled.

Pocket Pets is not a Mill. They do not breed. They are a broker. They sell sugar gliders.

And no, before you ask, I am not a supporter of them, you will never hear me tell people to buy a glider from them, however, I am a person who likes to get the truth and facts out there instead of parroted information.

This is something many folks will tell you to do. Maybe not in those words. We will tell you to apply some pressure. When joeys are in moms pouch and they feel scared, mom will tighten her pouch and this gives the joeys a sense of security. We breeders tell folks to do the same thing. Not so much to where you hurt the glider obviously, but enough to make the glider feel safer. When you remove the pressure, the glider feels threatened again, as it is not trusting you completely yet, it doesn't have a bond with you yet, so of course it will begin to crab again.

That makes sense. It just seems like a lot of pressure, like you're going to squish them almost! It might be instinctual for a momma glider but not so much for me rofl

Actually, it is an instinctual act for us as well. What do we do when our child cries? We hold them closer to us to make them feel safer.

So, this is a case where they did not give out "bad" information, you just did not understand what they meant. thumb

Hmm, good point, I didn't think of it that way! grin

The King Kong analogy is something else that they put a lot of emphasis on so it seems like that's a pretty universal glider-owner thing as well

Now we're seeing many of the gliders that were purchased at the fair showing up on ksl.com (similar to Craigslist) needing new homes. It's sad, but their selling technique is effective and these little guys become impulse buys.

We fell in love with them when we saw them at the fair. Except we went home, did our research, and then purchased from someone else.
