So my female glider had a joey in pouch before I neutered my male. Im assuming this by how big her pouch was after his appointment. Its been a month and a half since he was neutered. He has never shown aggression before or after his surgery and him and his former mate have always been in a cage by themselves so I am 100% sure the baby was his. I do have a pair of females in a different cage and had planned on putting my male in with them after his mates baby had grown up. This wasnt their first baby either. Well yesterday afternoon I found my female at the bottom of the cage and she appeared to be attacked and her baby was oop on the tray. The baby is furless and his ears are back so he is premature and I do have him in a heated aquarium as I cannot carry him on me during work. Im feeding him every 30min during the day and every hour at night. He does have a scratch on his head giving me the impression that he was attacked too.
I really do not think the baby will make it and while it's hard on me losing my first girl and now possibly the baby I've accepted it. My worry is my male glider. He is still nice to me and I am very lost to why he attacked his mate. There was food left over so I know it wasnt due to that. My main question is what to do with my male. I am very worried about placing him with my colony because what if he attacks them out of the blue? Again he's been really sweet before this and still is towards me. I did have him on his own for a year before buying his mate, my second glider, and he had done great. No mutilation or excessive weight gain. So I am wondering if I should leave him in his own cage for the rest of his life so I dont risk my other gliders. Hes five years old. Thoughts and opinions on where I should place him now? Putting him down as someone would with a dog that attack something isnt an option.

I'm sorry for your loss I would leave him by his self until you get him to the vet. Are you sure he killed his mate?

It looked like she was attacked as there was blood on her fur so its the only thing I can think of. I didnt look at her too much because I was so upset and was dealing with the baby. I had my father wrap her up in a blanket and bury her. And she wasnt that old. Only 2 1/2 so it wasnt from old age. Everyone eats the same food and there was nothing new added to the food and nothing new added to the room. We also dont use cleaners in that room and its far from the kitchen so there wouldnt be any fumes from cooking. She didnt have any weight loss either so I believe she was getting enough food and didnt die of malnourishment. The male does seem healthy. The only thing I can think of is that he reacted the same way he would of if the baby wasnt his and wanted to kill it. (Ive always been told a male will kill another males baby so they can have their own blood line. Im not sure if this is true but Im just assuming)

the reason I ask is I don't have any experience with a freshly neutered male. I have one scheduled for a neuter now but I also never herd of that kind of behavior. it is almost like there was something wrong like a popped stich or infection or something. But like I said I don't have any experience like that. Good luck with your joey. hopefully one of the experienced breeders can get back to you the people on this site are awesome.

Have you checked your male for any wounds? It could be that the female was, for whatever reason, picking at the area of the neuter and perhaps he attacked her out of self-defense?

Honestly, I haven't heard of this before. Hopefully someone with more experience will be able to help you.

It is more probable that your female died and the male was trying to clean up the evidence.

In the wild they will either eat the dead or try to get them away from the colony so the dead do not attract predators.

I am very sorry for your loss.

Although its not exactly the best of circumstances that idea makes me feel better since it would mean my Hush is still the sweet fluff I know. But still leaves the issue of why my girl died... frown

The only way for answers as to why your female died would have been to have a necropsy done.
