My little Ares just had an emergency stemming from an eye infection. He's probably going to be partially blind in one eye, but the emergency has passed and the vet OKed him to go back in the regular cage. He had anesthesia the morning he was OKed and they warned me that the anesthesia can make them smell weird to their colony-mates so if they fight, wait a while and try again. So I did that, but even 12+ hours later, my more aggressive glider (who is Ares' sister) still went after him when I tried to let them be together. And I mean, she would attack him and ball up. So now I'm REALLY hesitant to let them near each other, what with his eye still healing up. Has anyone seen this happen before? Tonight I'm planning to treat them like gliders who have never met before. Athena has spent the day with fleece that Ares has been sleeping in so she can remember his scent. It just seems so strange to me, they've been together their entire lives and now suddenly after 1 week apart she wants to attack him? Any advice would be welcome!

I don't have personal experience with that, I have always put my neutered boys back in with their family right away with no problems.

I would put them together in the morning when they are ready for bed. If they go quietly into a bonding pouch, then wear them for the rest of the day and put them in their cage in the evening.

Put two sleeping pouches in the cage.

It may be necessary to keep them separated until his eye and the infection have completely healed.

If the eye is not yet clear of infection, that may be what his sister is reacting to.

In the wild, gliders will chase a sick or injured member of the colony out because their illness and weakness could attract predators.

I would let them sleep together if they are calm in a bonding pouch together and you are there to supervise them. I would probably not keep them together when you are not there to supervise because she might further injure him until he has completely healed - then you can gradually reintroduce them.

Hi Mindy,

We went through a similar thing with our gliders. Two of them (sisters) had surgery for mammary cancer at the same time. They were part of a cage of four. When they had recovered and were ready to go back to their cage, we reintroduced them to Foehn and CB (sister and brother), their cage mates. It did not go well, similar to what you are experiencing. We consulted with an experienced owner who told us to basically let them work it out. They needed to re-establish the cage pecking order. So, that's what we did in supervised play time. It was hard to listen to them ball up, but in fairly short order they were all OK with each other again.

Your situation is slightly different, in that they are brother/sister and you are only working with two. I think you approaching it correctly - reintroducing them as if they were new. For your own piece of mind and Ares' you might wait until he is completely healed before you physically try and get them together again. In the meantime perhaps switch pouches and blankets every night so they get used to their smells again.

If when you get them together again they do ball up, let them do it but keep an eye on them. As long as they are making noise while they are balled up it's OK. If things start to get quiet then intervene with a piece of fleece. My guess is that they may ball up once or twice, and then it will be like they were never apart.

Good luck!

Thanks so much for all the advice. Ares went over the Rainbow Bridge last night. I'm in shock, I thought he was recovering. I had him and Athena both out for playtime last night. Ares was really low energy but I thought it was just because he was still resting up after his ordeal. Athena was fine with him outside the cage but whenever I put him back in she attacked him. I guess she knew something I didn't. I kept them apart for the night and went to get them this morning to let them cuddle in my sweatshirt pocket, but he was gone. I'll bring him by the vet for a necropsy later today.

I am so very sorry to hear this about your Sweet Ares. It could be many things from an infection not seen going through his system to his not completely recovering from the anesthesia.

Thanks for the condolences. We heard back about Ares' necropsy- the cause of death was ulcerations in his intestines, most likely caused by the metacam he was on for pain. He was on a middle of the road dosage, so he must have been especially sensitive to it, and it also didn't help that he wasn't eating as much as usual (he had to be hand fed because of the e-collar, and anyway didn't seem to have much appetite). I'm so heartbroken that something I did to help him did such damage, but I know there's no way anyone could have predicted this. And at least now we know that his sister Athena shouldn't be given metacam, for the future.

Please don't feel bad. These little guys can't tell us where it hurts, so we have to give our best guess sometimes.

I am so sorry for your loss.
