I clean my gliders bathroom tray every day and almost every day I see what looks like a small amount of reddish brown liquid. More brown than red really. I have 2 gliders and I'm pretty sure i know which one is doing it. Has anyone seen or heard of something like this before? They've both been to the vet recently and had no parasites and are a healthy weight. They also don't have uti's either because i had their urine tested. They play like crazy and eat their staple diet very well. This i know for sure: when they urinate it's pale yellow but by morning it's the reddish brown. It's not mixing with feces and i don't believe any of the foods they are eating are coloring their urine. Anyway, they both eat the same thing and only one of them is doing it. My husbands mother studied zoology and mentioned it was probably oxidation of the urine but what would cause that? I cannot seem to find a decent answer anywhere.

I believe you are seeing the sugar in the urine as the urine dries.

Seeing as you have had them checked for UTIs already I would continue to watch them. When a glider has a UTI their urine will also smell strong.

I'm not sure what else to be looking out for. My one glider has had this going on since October. It could have been before because I used to use dark brown paper liners for the tray. When I decided to not put anything down and just clean it daily is when I noticed it. The smell isn't strong, it sort of smells a little sweet like food. But it's not that.

The color also has a lot to do with the glider's fluid intake. Some gliders may drink more water than others. Most gliders meet their fluid needs by eating the juicy fruits and vegetables offered with the liquid staple each night.

If you are feeding a dry pellet food or fruits and vegetables that are not high in liquid content this would cause the urine to be darker.

Try offering more juicy fruits like melons and see if it makes a difference.

So it sounds like you're saying dehydration. If that were the case wouldn't it come out that color? It comes out a pale yellow but turns a brownish red hours later.

Carson,

I work repair medical equipment, which means I sometimes have the dubious privilege of working equipment that someone has had an 'accident' on & it got in. I can usually tell the coffee drinkers.
:owell:

What's my point in sharing that? From my experience, I can tell you urine doesn't really dry out... it more becomes concentrated over time, but not quickly nor fully. Depending on whether your furball is getting more of his hydration from food or from drinking water would effect the balance of anything that comes out as urine & what is looks like as it, ummm, gels.

My guess: He's probably getting most his fluids from what he eats as opposed to directly drinking. That would raise the sugar content of his urine as well as include some additional (natural) chemistry that gets flushed that way... like why you can smell your coffee when you've have enough while using the toilet. As it gels, it will considerably darken. On top of that, sugars will oxidize (as someone else mentioned) causing a color shift.

Personally, I wouldn't be too concerned right now, especially since everything is checking out. Hope that helps & you feel more comfortable with what's going on.

That does make a lot of sense Hutch. I do see him drink but definitely eat much more. The urine does seem a little pasty. He's had this problem for several months and doesn't seem affected by anything. What is so strange is that I have searched for this answer for months and no one seems to know what I'm talking about or has ever had a glider do this. My guy can't be the only glider that gets more hydration from food than water.

My glider Stuart doesn't drink much water at all. He eats his fruits and veggies and I notice some days are darker than others so I doubt there is any cause in alarm.

He's probably not, but a lot of people use some type on lining or clean up every day... that would affect what they can see and maybe even the final appearance (like if it mixes with newspaper ink). Adding to that, every person/critter body processes things slightly different, which is why medical stuff deals with 'average ranges' versus set numbers.

Maybe your furball's output is at the extreme end of the range for something? Maybe it's more common than people realize? Unfortunately, that is getting far enough outside my understanding that I cannot make an educated guess, only widely speculate.

I used a liner for a few months and he could have been doing it before when I got him and didn't know. Hutch thanks for your input. It has helped quite a bit. I'm still going to do a little research and perhaps take him back to the vet or a new vet just for a checkup but I do feel better about it. I'd hate to know something was wrong and I didn't help him. I appreciate all your info!

@Sugiemom is it the same as mine? You see the darker spots later?

Yes i have watched him go and it seems fairly clear however the longer it sits the darker it seems to become.

And did you ever take him to the vet or were you not worried?

Hissing while peeing and strong smelling urine is a sign of a UTI.

You may want to have your little one checked out for a UTI.

No he never shows symptoms of UTI so i'm not worried, and I usually worry about everything.

Thanks Feather but he doesn't hiss while using the bathroom and he's already been checked for a uti!
