Two years ago, I made a glider quiz for my prospective joey adopters.. and gathered my information from MANY sources (reliable all), but I didn't write them down, lol.

Someone emailed me today.. and said they've read everything on gliders (everything, lol), and they've not read anything on how cooking with teflon pans near gliders is bad for them..

....And interestingly enough, I can't officially remember myself. Oops, lol.

I was hoping someone here knew/remembered and could refresh my memory, so I could reply and give accurate information, whether that's still accurate or not. (IF So), ThankYou.

I don't use them but this would be neat info to know...I do vaegly rember hearing (reading) something but all I can think of is maybe a certain fume or gas is created when heating the teflon that is bad for them? I know it's not the best for us as it is...

I've always heard Teflon is very toxic in vapor form for birds, and small flakes can be very harmful for us human slaves so I always thought it was safe to assume the fumes weren't safe for my glider kids either.

What would they be "cooking" for the gliders? We feed the Suncoast diet, so maybe it's another diet that has you cook stuff, but we don't have to cook anything for them. They get fresh or frozen everything. Help

Yes, Teflon vapors are toxic to gliders. It's not only what you may cook for them, it's using them in your home period. I got rid of everything non-stick just to be on the safe side years ago and went back to iron skillets.

BTW a person could cook eggs in them without oils or butter for the gliders. I use the microwave.

Here is one of many links about Teflon and the toxicity of it to birds and humans also. It causes a painful suffocation. Please read about it here. TEFLON TOXIC

ThankYou so much Sugar Blossoms. That's just what I wanted.

I WAS refering to the fumes, not necessarily what you cook FOR them.

And I didn't want to pass on vague.. 'it's bad, just don't do it' advice, lol.. So I appreciate the assistance.

Teflon pans are TERRIBLE... for anything...We only cook on cast iron or stainless because....

Well, ever looked at an older teflon pan and wonder where teh coating is? You ate it as some point or another. Not to mention that heating almost any plastic releases chemicals into the air that are bad for you.

Not really a reason that they're bad for gliders I guess.

LOL Amy, Myglidergirlsyd was wondering what would be cooked in a pan for gliders. and You're very welcome.

Princess, I remember when Silverstone brand came out a few ahem, years ago. haha I used those but they still flaked after awhile. You really aren't supposed to wash teflon, just wipe it out but I couldn't do that. I HAD to wash them! LOL Once, when I scorched something in one, the smell was SO bad it stung my eyes and they burned for hours. I never thought back then that it was something toxic. Makes me wonder about our environment even more. Who knows what we could be using without realizing it's toxic to us and our pets? Heck, my mother used to use LEAD crystal for us to drink out of! *shivers*

SugarBlossoms, I know who said it, I just kind of lump replied to everyone at once, lol.. sorry about that. hehe. Anyway, thank you again for the link.

Like I said, I dont have or use teflon pans, nor would I.. I just didn't have the proper information to mail this girl asking me why I have it in my quiz that you can't use it, when she's never read anything of the sort, lol.. If I hadn't posted, I would have just said.. uhmmmm.. Cause? lol.

Megs.. lol.

Ame, it's not just teflon but any non-stick pans. The non-stick on all adheres w/fluorocarbons. If humans were perfect and these pans never were heated any higher than 250 degrees, they might not offgas in a damaging way. But we are not and it's questionable as to just what temp it takes for one to offgas lethal fumes. We know that at 500 degrees, lethal fumes can be measured and at 600 degrees lung damage to humans is occurring. Anecdotal evidence with birds points to much lower temps. Also self cleaning ovens have nonstick surfaces and turning on the cleaning cycle will kill birds in the same room. That terrible smell when the self cleaning oven is cleaning. . . open windows and keep all living things out of the room.

well I must say that those cast iron pans are the best anyway. Nothing even related to teflon can compare to the long wear and tear that those pans can do.

Plus this brings up a good point. I use the microwave if I do cook eggs, but come to think of I think that that is all I cook as far as foods for my suggies.

Thank you for addressing this. This is good to know.
