Hi all! I am new to the forum and a new Suggie mamma. I adopted a male and female off Craigslist in February, and have been reading everything I can get my hands on and trying to give these sweeties the best home. I found out a week after I adopted them (at their first vet visit) that my female was pregnant! I'm super excited but do plan on neutering the male as soon as baby is weaned. She has a single healthy, beautiful baby boy we named "Truffle." He is 3 weeks OOP as of today. My question is, everything I am reading says they should only weigh 17-27 grams. My baby is 36 grams! Is this because he is an only child? Is this normal for anyone else? All along he has been bigger than the charts I read. Just curious! Fortunately mom and dad have been amazing parents and obviously taking great care of him. Just wondering if anyone has had this happen. Thank you!

sounds like a normal weight for a 3 week oop single joey to me. I just had one that weighed 38 grams at TWO weeks oop, and yes she is a single... and yes that is excessively large and mom even knew so, so mom started trying to keep her off the nipple.

Your little girls weight is right on track, even my twins run around 25-35 grams at 3 weeks oop. Just means mom is doing well and is producing much milk supply and baby is nursing often. thumb

If you want to know what a person is like, watch how he treats others.

You'll never know what the outcome is if you don't step up and try.

Thank you so much! I am happy to hear that this is normal for a single. I appreciate your input and am keeping my fingers crossed that mom doesn't try to stop nursing too soon.
I noticed last night that baby wanted to crawl out of pouch to explore the cage, but mom and dad didn't allow it. lol Do you know when they will let baby have some freedom?

The joey may also be a little longer OOP than you think. Moms sometimes stuff joeys back in the pouch especially singles for a while after they have actually detached and should be officially OOP. If you remember the date the joey opened its eyes you can count back 10 days to get a better estimate of the OOP date.

Thanks! I did count back and it is about 12 days... so I think I am calculating OOP date correctly! He is now 42 grams at 3 1/2 weeks. Whew!! At night he tries to come out of their sleeping pouch to play and explore but mom and dad don't let him and make him go back in. frown At what age will they let him roam a little? He seems relieved when I take him out and hold him that he gets out, but they aren't too happy about it going on for too long.
