I need to buy a wheel! I have a rescue glider who hasn't used a wheel in years or ever. She is about 4-5 (guess) and is kinda chubby and missing a few toe nails. She is getting more active and playful and will soon be living with a baby sister who is 5-6 month old sweet as pie but busy busy busy :o)

So tell me WHY you love your wheel. (links to buy, also awesome)

Also, side cage mount or floor free standing ? Why do you prefer one over the other ?

I'm a new Suggie mom. So I'm looking for personal preferences not right/wrong as long as they are Suggie safe.

most of the main wheel manufactures without poles in center of wheel look good. I use 2 raptors, they are great, nice quiet bearing. One cage mount is great. one floor stand is MOVEABLE and is also great. I got stainless steel track so it won't rust, and sandpaper to help with the nails.

I think the main part is the bearing, the right bearing will provide long QUIET life.
One wheel provides an offset to help make glider work harder.

I love my stealth wheel. 52 bucks on Amazon. Bought it basically after reading as much as I could. It's quiet, safe, I like the plastic mesh running surface. As long as they don't chew it, it should last a long time.

Equips well with sandpaper (YAY!). There are two little flanges all the way around the outside edges of the wheel. Sandpaper wedges in there nicely. (you still have to make the sandpaper strip as tight as you reasonably can with masking tape--and cut it to the appropriate width of course.)

Sandpaper only around the outside of the running mesh, abrasive side IN.

When they run on it, their little claws poke through and hit the paper. Their feet mostly just hit the mesh--but their claws poke through and get ground down.
If you put sandpaper directly on the inside it will abrade their feet.
Another cool thing is the stand made from all 1/2" standard size PVC. Which means if you want to get adventurous you could build all kinds of crazy stands and mounting brackets for it from readily available, cheap parts.
Or if you are feeling a little neanderthal getting it out of the packaging and you BREAK it, (Damn you Amazon!) it's easily repairable.

Blah blah blah...sorry....ramble...

Point is, the Stealth wheel adapts well to this--and it seems pretty effective at keeping them manicured.

I would also get two...one to mount in the cage...one to take into the tent.

Seriously though. Love the wheel. More importantly...THEY love it. I actually want to find some kind of lightweight odometer for it. I would like to see how far they run. It's gotta be miles by now.

Opinions will differ...but that's my brain dump on that.

I just ordered a custom Cruiser. It should be here in a few days so I can't give a review but I have heard fantastic things about it

Right now I'm leaning toward the stealth , but I'd love to hear about the custom cruiser when it comes.

I just order and got in an atticworx magnum wheel with an Xmount. I ordered the Xmount so the wheel wouldn't be taking up floor space for future add ins. I can hear Talia tigger hopping away in it as I type this! The customer service was amazing and they priority mail 2 day shipped it! So far I /she (soon to be they) love it. And it is HUGE, I have issues with scale and even after having the measurements was amazed at the size (although it fits in my DCN cage nicely.)

I got the junior stealth. My cage door is small. Plan on getting a new cage in the next couple weeks , but figured it would hurt to have a smaller one for travel or an extra ect. So far , so good ! smile

I have all Fast Track, 2 Apollo and 1 Voyager Travel
(links in blue)

Why I love them? I like that the wheels are removable from the mount. This makes them easier to install as well as to remove for cleaning and replace. I've had them for a few years.

Cage or floor stand mount? I like both! They have different advantages. I keep one cage mount and one floor stand mount in the cage, usually the floor mount is the travel size to conserve space (although both large wheels fit in their cage fine), and to offer a different feel. They use both. Wheel on floor stand gets anchored down for safety for gliders and to prevent too much movement around cage.

Cage mount pretty much is kept in the same place, I move it only occasionally, the floor mount gets moved around with various arrangements I set up on major cleaning schedule. I have a cage mount and floor stand for each size, and I keep one wheel on floor stand handy for use for out of cage play.

Hi everyone,

Okay, I'm a little concerned and a whole lot confused. I bought a 12" wheel off of Amazon. It is called the Silent Runner. It's a solid plastic wheel and has the holes in the front. There is nothing that their tails or feet can get caught on. It's a 3" wide track.

$37.95

Unfortunately, I am not computer savvy enough to post the link. But if you go to Amazon.com and do a search you will see the one I got.

Anyway, I took it out of the cage for tent time this morning and I noticed that Roo, who is a little older then Nigel, can get the wheel going so fast that she tends to hang onto the holes from the inside until it slows down. Nigel hangs on to the holes but on the outside and as Roo is spinning, his head hits the floor. Luckily the floor of the tent is padded. But the bottom of the cage is not. :thumbd: In the cage, my husband has the wheel on the stand but attached to the cage so it doesn't move. I wonder if that makes it higher. Hmmmmmmm.

So, now I'm thinking that this wheel is just not safe. But I also don't like the mesh bottoms on the other wheels. I'm afraid their toes could get caught.

They love their wheel and it wasn't cheap :owell: I welcome ANY advice on the wheel I purchased and the other wheels out there. I'm so confused!!!!!! :hit:

The mesh is the best part of the glider safe wheels. It allows them to push off and grab. It also helps keep the wheel from getting smelly to quickly because it flings pee/poo out as they run.

I have a fastrack and an atticworks wheel. I also have a fastrack treadwheel. I love them all.

I also have nail trimmers on each wheel.

It is supposed to be the answer to Wodent wheels which can be unsafe if not used with the tail guard or kept very clean.

I don't like it because when the poop and pee in it that is where it stays.

The other wheels the poop and pee just falls through.

I have had rescues come in where that wheel has been just caked with excrement. YUK!!!

Not my babies!!! Their cage is clean and so is the wheel. There is nothing for them to get caught on. I just worry about Nigel hanging onto the outside while Roo spins the wheel. I would never, ever let their wheel or cage or anything get caked with feces and pee.

I may get another wheel. The cage is big enough to house two wheels and I could get the nail trim insert.

The mesh wheels are actually safe for gliders, but if you prefer solid wheels there are some available. Here is a link to one at http://www.spinzoneglobal.com/Solid-Track-Apollo_p_46.html

You will need to order a stand separately, either a floor stand or cage mount. If your cage is sturdy enough for a cage mount, I recommend getting one of each kind. The cage mount will stay on the cage bars where you attach it, at any height, but then you can remove the wheel from the mount for easy cleaning and also to use on floor stand for tent time. If you feel you can use only the floor stand mount, that works well too. I use one of each in my cage and and also have a floor stand to use for out of cage play. One of the things I love about Fast Track wheels!

Well, mine do that, but with the stand they come with or the cage mount, there is enough clearance around the wheel (cage mount should be at least 4" clearance on all sides. My wheels have 5" clearance ). And yes they may get knocked it the head, but they learn fast to hang on or jump off.

Thanks for the advice. I am considering a second wheel. At this point the one I have is glider safe and easy to clean. I just use a cloth and clean it with Dawn original and warm water every other day or so. Depends on how messy the kids get. I am very picky about the cleanliness of my babies. This wheel came with a stand and I can use it for tent time. Also my husband was able to secure it to the side of the cage while still on the stand. Without it being secured it would travel across the cage floor when the kids were spinning.

I don't know for sure, I haven't done a price comparison, but I would believe the Fast Track Apollo is most likely the cheapest of the safe wheels.
