I haven't been to the board in a long time but wanted to update folks on the Hawaiian rescues, Laki and Lele. Lele unfortunately passed away a few years ago (a couple years after the adoption), apparently from an impacted bowel, leaving me with Laki and my original 2.

I've been really busy with work this summer so hadn't been watching for them to come out when I fed them. Last night, just as I was heading to bed, I noticed I only saw 2 gliders. I looked around in the cage but couldn't see any sign of the third. The cube was empty so I figured he was hiding in one of the corners.

Well, this morning I took a closer look and found him spread-eagled under the exercise wheel. From the condition of the body, he must actually have died 3-4 days ago so there was no point in trying to get a necropsy. I saw no signs of blood or injury but he had a pained expression on his face so I can only assume he also had an impacted bowel.

I moved the other 2 gliders to my spare cage while I give it a good scrubbing and disinfecting and gave Laki a funeral pyre in the backyard. The ashes will be spread amongst my roses.

I want those who donated to rescuing these two to know they had a good life since the rescue. Laki obviously a bit longer than Lele. I'm sorry it wasn't longer.

Sorry for your loss.

I just wanted to add, that being the case that these two were rescues, you have no idea as to what inner problems could have been caused by improper diet/care. I am happy they enjoyed the remainder of their life with you.

I am very sorry for your loss. May you find comfort and peace in your memories of him. :rbridge:

I remember all the hoops members of the community jumped through to get them out of Hawaii.

I wish for the community that they had lived longer but they at least made it years longer than they would have if left in Hawaii.

Lele seemed perpetually nervous and I'm sure the reaction from one of my original suggies, Judah, made it worse. Laki seemed to get along fine with both Judah and Anson after Lele passed. Neither of them seemed to care for the wheel but they enjoyed jumping around inside the cage I built (it's 6x4x2 feet to give them room and I usually keep willow branches inside to give them something to climb around on.

I was more annoyed and guilt-ridden over not noticing Laki's death sooner. At least with Lele, I saw him hanging from the pouch the morning after he died. In this case, Laki must have died over 3 days before I noticed. I'm glad Anson and Judah didn't mutilate the corpse.

I disinfected and steam cleaned the cage and let it sit for a couple days before moving Anson and Judah back in. Both of them seem to be happy.
