Hey guys...
Been doing some half-arsed behavior experiments here...

Trying to train out biting--of course. It's not a problem, but it's an ongoing thing, so I decided to try something.

Arrow: If arrow puts his teeth on me, even for a second, he gets a stern PFFT! Accompanied by a twitch of whatever appendage he bit.

Aria: Doesn't get corrected until her bite becomes uncomfortable. When that happens, the correction will start with a mild twitch and a soft, PFFT, Ramping up the correction intensity proportional to the bite--if the behavior continues. But if the bite is light, and doesn't hurt, it doesn't get corrected.

Been doing this for a couple weeks now.

What seems to be happening is basically:
Arrow: Some progress; more tolerant of handling with less toothy objections.

Aria: Big progress; Aria seems to be not only biting less, but is also developing bite INHIBITION.

Is that weird?

Will keep playing with this and post more...

Good work! What sort of behavior are you seeing in Aria as inhibition?

I've been working on biting issues as well, and enjoying some progress. For a while there, my boy Yoda was drawing blood on an almost daily basis. He just utterly adores putting his teeth on anything he can reach. I imagine that I can hear the voice in his head saying, "I want to BITE IT!!"

My best strategy with Yoda has been skin avoidance. I would offer my girl Winky a bare hand or arm, but Yoda only got a hand well wrapped in my sleeve, which he would happily chew on.

After a few weeks of no bad bites, I started allowing Yoda near bare skin again. He still likes to put his teeth on my fingers and toes (and ears, and elbows, etc.), but he doesn't chomp down and chew anymore. When he's on low-speed just after waking or before sleep, I offer him my bare hand to sniff (he loves sniffing even more than biting) and let him give me a gentle bite to say hello. That seems to be a compromise that works for both of us.

I don't know about your furballs, Dave, but one of the most effect things I've done with the girls is put them in 'time out,' AKA: Back the the Cage while everyone else gets to keep playing.

Biting has not been a big issue with them in a long time, but when twant to test me, this stops it dead quickly.

Mine will still nip me from time to time, I think maybe it is b/c I got them off guard, so they are letting me know this. They've taught me to go slower, & always talk to them once you have gotten around the cage.
One of my gliders, petrie, will still bite all the time. he just doesn't like being messed with for the most part,
so we just give him the treat, & leave him alone while paying attention to duckie & stubbie.

We are new to gliders, but I am not new to experimentation, albeit it has been a number of years since conducting any.

A solid method of comparison testing between subjects is to try the exact same method(s) with each subject and then switch methods, and do the same thing(s) for each subject and repeat, depending on the number of methods you wish to try.

You can then compare results for each subject and their respective method and also compare the methods between subjects. That may reveal a certain thing that works for one but not the other, or maybe even for both.

Granted what you are trying may be working, but it may not provide transferable results because you haven't used a control type methodology...although sometimes good results are all that matters in this situation.

With all of that said, I am curious about any results you post because we know that one of our little guys is shy and can tend to bite a bit...so please provide any results, even if anecdotal, would be appreciated by us.

Hutch hey!
Thanks for all the replies guys.
We just got our big shipment of treats in, so I have been stuffing them with treats.
Just in time too...the troops were restless!
Haven't been doing much with the grand experiment just lately.
The new crack is pumpkin seeds.

Mine love pumpkin seeds. But I have to snap them in half first. Then they chew the heck out of the hull.

Pumpkin Seeds, I'll have to remember that one. Where do you get them from?

Got them from Critterlove.
I am getting lazy. I could probably find cheaper sources for things like dried papaya and pumpkin seeds, and yogies, but it's just easier for me to order it all from one place that I know is going to be glider safe.
