Hi all, new to the forum as of a few days ago, but had been lurking for a while though. We just re-homed a couple 1 to 1.5 year old-ish males yesterday. They played all night long and seem to be doing OK as they didn't crab once after getting them back in their cage...they even came to the bars to snag a couple yogis.

Anyway, I want to switch their diet from the Vita Prima Exotics Sugar Glider formula pellets (supposedly w/veggies & fruits) to the BML or Modified BML diet with the recommended fruit & veggies....even though they look and act healthy, and the paperwork from the vet a couple months ago said they were good too.

Is there a gradual method I should use or just make the switch over a night or two? I just don't want to shake up their world too much more right away, but I don't like the idea of the pellet stuff either. TY

They should be fine with the switch, but if you wanted to wait a week in order to slow the changes they won't suffer from being on their old diet a few more days.

I agree with Hutch. You could offer the pellets during the day as a snack.

We are gathering the supplies for the BLM diet and will switch one night while watching to see if they at least start to eat it...interesting take on giving the pellets as treats though, and there isn't much left in the bag we got with all of the supplies.

Several members (including me) leave pellets in all the time in case they wake pekish during the day & go looking for munchies. I use Sun Coast's Wholesome Balence, but you'll see several other types as well in this forum.

Personally, mine like to start the evening with a pellet or two, then they go looking for where I stashed the night's meal.

So you mentioned that you stash the meal, does that mean you don't simply have it in an open, regular, location in the cage? I simply put food up near their bed so they can mosey out and eat. Maybe I can leave some pellets nearby when they feel peckish, but move the main food around a bit??

I do not leave either the pellets or main meal near the pouch since I want them to get out & exercise. The pellets I leave in the same area, but the main meal I mix-up on them. About 2/3 of the time it is somewhere on the bottom (being lazy) though never in the same spot twice. I do try to think of thier bathroom habits before placing, though. The other third I'll place it on a large hammock or in a clamshell or box-hide somewhere in the cage.

Trust me, they have no trouble following thier nose, as evident by them always finding hidden treats before going after the main course, but it keeps things a little interesting for both of us. Sometime I even get a squeak of surprise if I hide a half in one place & half in another 'There's MORE!?'

It helps that mine have no problem sharing food so I often just use one larger dish. I don't need to worry about having enough distance between food-protective fluffballs with tails.

It is good to move things around a bit. Since they are active at night, I will guarantee if you hide and utilize every corner of their cage every night, they will seek it out. They get bored and need a bit of change.

Easter egg time... grab some plastic eggs and put a treat in them. It's a great enrichment toy. I also use "breathe savers " puck container as well as tictac boxes. Toothbrush covers work as well. Plastic pill boxes. .. I could go on.

Get the small plastic eggs. They work better for the gliders, IMO
