Hello! I'm new here, not sure if I'm posting to the right page. I have two sugar gliders and have had them for probably 2 months now. They're not completely bonded to me but they'll come to me when I put my hand in the cage, they recognize my voice, and they will crawl all over me and not leave when I get them out of the pouch. However when they are coming to me and smelling me they still bite my fingers, they don't draw blood anymore but I know they're not biting out of fear and I've tried the psst noise and it doesn't work. Idk what else it making them bite me since they're not afraid of my hand anymore. Any advice is welcome! Thanks smile

Do you use yummy smelling soap?

Another thing to do is slowly push nose aside and tsk with a firm no.

Or have a toy handy to let them bite. Maybe a straw. Anything to distract them.

Also I have learned to wash my hands after handling food with unscented soap.

Since they get treats from your fingers, they have to learn the difference. And some are just curious what you taste like.

Welcome to the forum! One of my gliders had a biting phase as well, but he seems to have almost grown out of it. Making a "tsk!" sound when they bite helps to discourage them.

I got to the point where I was avoiding any bare-hand contact with my biter, wrapping my hands in my sleeves for protection when we played. That worked well, and I've been slowly re-introducing bare skin as he's becoming more trustworthy. I'd say the whole biting phase has been probably 2-3 months.

Good luck!

Even when I cover my hand they still try as hard as they can to bite me through the fabric! I know you're supposed to "tolerate the biting" until they're use to you but they are use to me, not completely bonded but they come to me and don't crab at me anymore. I guess I'll just have to let it happen and see if it'll stop! Thanks!

I have unscented soap that I use, so my hands shouldn't smell good. I know after I eat something they'll like my fingers, then they bite

They are at the age where they taste everything, try distracting them like Dawn said. Wiggle your fingers and tsk to them, it they keep at it tsk louder or try to mimic a hiss.

I've had my babies since February, and I'm still worried about the biting too. When I have them loose, ( I go into the bathroom and close the door) I've noticed that the biting is very minimal. One is more of a biter than the other. They seem to go after my toes! I make sure to wash my hands really good with unscented soap. That seems to help. I take some vinigar water mixture with me, I haven't tried using it yet, but figure I can wipe the mixture so my hands don't smell very good to them. Good luck!! We might be trying to bond at about the same time!! April

Do you polish your toe nails? That may be why they are going after your toes and maybe not dunno

If you feed them treats, they may be looking for them.

So have you settled on their names being Batman and Robyn? The bigger one is a male? Batman?

No, I haven't settled for it yet, mostly because I think the bigger one is the girl crazy if I could tell the sexes apart without actually grabbing and looking, I would be happy!! Haha!!!
