So, taking all of the advice gleaned from here, I went into nail clipping mode today. What a horrible experience!!! Both gliders got out from the fleece (I was trying to not squish them, and then they clawed me) and so I shoved a towel under my door quickly to keep them from squeezing out. What a mess!!! Finally gathered them up. First one: 5 poops later, most of the nails clipped and one bled for a second. Next one I THINK I got them all but she was so squiggly and I didn't want to squish her more than I had to and was worried I was going to break her little legs!!! Neither even wanted treats after and they were breathing so heavy!!! I hope they are both ok, I tried to be firm but not hurtful. What an awful event.

I use a pouch to trim nails. I pull one foot out and then smush the opening and hold in closed with my forearm. If you press your thumb into their palm it opens up the little fingers.

You can be firm, this way they can't get their mouth out to bite, most act like you are taking their nails at the first knuckle.

Any poops are in the pouch. I give them a clean pouch when I am done.

shakehead I will say I would rather chop their salad up for week at 8 hours a day than clip nails.

It's something new to learn on both parts. Mine hate me to touch their feet. Feather recommends to handle them and their feet when not clipping nails. It earns me getting bit... Many times... But I am diligent and and keep trying. Maybe I just need to do this daily, maybe 10 times a day... Hey, can I borrow some bandades? I'm out... :fall: :jump2:

I'll have to try the pouch. I might be able to get one paw out....I got so worried cause they would twist and turn I didn't want to break something!!
It was just horrible. They both jumped back and were running on their wheel afterwards so I don't think the nail I hit the quick on was bleeding any more or even hurting. I'll have to try handling their little feet. We JUST got to a bonding point where if I put my hand in their pouch they don't really nibble they accept it, but not without complaints. In the tent they still up and down but mostly on my back. The bathroom today though overwhelmed them so tent time for now is how we shall continue.

By the amount of poop and crying you would think I was cutting off their paw at the body!!!

Today has been a harrowing experience haha.

I have to use a pouch with my Ollie boy for most of his nails. However I do manage to get a few and sometimes more with my wormmie method. A dish of AYCE freeze dried meallies from Camilies Mealies, works well for my Lulu & Skadoosh. They'll just munch away while I pick up their feet to trim and file.

I started with them by just touching their feet, then I began to hold each foot in my fingers a bit while they ate their wormmies. After a couple of sessions, they were both fine with me clipping nails. I was especially surprised that my Lulu was on board with it. Ollie is taking way longer to come around, however there are some trims where I get most of his front nails clipped, and some I don't.

When Mary comes up again I will have her video tape while I trim nails and we will post it here.

larry & I have been taking our gliders to the vet. we have 3 gliders, i just don't want getting bit all the time.
they lightly sedate them, and the job gets done,
we pay $51for every four weeks, the kids don't hate me as much anymore, paying someone is totally worth it.

Thank you kim!

And I understand Josefine. I wish mine could wait that long. Fiona gets sticky after 3 weeks. So I trim them every 2 to 3 weeks.

I have the pads on the wheel that help out. This is the first time I actually felt them getting caught on the tent a bit since I got them, which was 2 months ago now. So I think the sandpaper is helping. My vet is about 30 minutes away and it costs $55 per animal, especially with the sedation, and sometimes I already have to pay for my hedgehog because he's stubborn so I really need to try to do it myself. I wrapped their little faces in some fleece so they wouldn't be able to bite but they wiggle out so easily. Plus not being bonded they are not really happy about being handled by my bare hands yet. Hopefully over time things will get better. It's harrowing haha.
