It's with an extremely heavy heart that I am posting my last update on Ollie.

After my post Monday Ollie woke up and wasn't able to stand. I tried to to put him on the scale to weigh him and he just tipped over on his side. I held him in my hand for a few hours and gave him his meds, including an anti-inflammatory for the first time in hopes it would help him. He wouldn't settle down to go back to sleep like usual and started to get a bit twitchy.

I decided to take him to an emergency vet at about 10pm, as I was worried he was suffering. I took him in and they didn't have anyone on staff who was really equipped to deal with a glider, so they put him in an oxygen incubator and tried to keep him comfortable. And if I'm being honest with myself I wasn't ready to make a decision and holding out hope for a last ditch miracle.

They kept him overnight and surprisingly he survived the night. The little guy is a fighter. I picked him up in the morning and took him straight over to my vet when they opened. They took him in, put him in oxygen and gave him a shot of steroids to see if he would respond at all. I left him there all day and returned at 430pm to see how he was doing. While he he perked up just slightly and was able to stand again, he was still in rough shape. He was interested in eating but he could barely hold his head up to do so.

After talking with my vet she said my options were to put him down then or take him home and hope that he passes quietly at home - but there was also the risk that he would go into fits or seizures and pass more violently. But there was no other hope for him to get better.

So I chose to have him put down at the vets. I couldn't bare to have him suffer any longer after the awful trauma he's been through. When they brought him out his head perked up when he heard me and grabbed my finger but was too weak to pull himself onto my hand. I grabbed him and he immediately curled up and went to sleep in my hand. I snuggled with him for a long while and said my goodbyes.

This whole experience has been heartbreaking and I still can't believe I lost my little guy like this. He was really special.

Kirby got up last night and was searching for his buddy everywhere. He and Ollie were only together for 7 months but they were best pals and inseparable already. Even in the hospital cage he would go and visit Ollie and give him gentle nuzzles.

I am relieved that Ollie is no longer suffering, but it still doesn't make this any easier. frown

Oh my goodness Jen I'm so sorry to hear this about Ollie angel . I think we've all been pulling for him to start getting better. You've been a great owner to him and did everything possible to help him. I'm sure these last few days have been difficult for you but Ollie knew you loved him, you had a good bond and trust together. Give those other little gliders of yours some extra cuddles. hug2 and I sincerely wish you the best and my condolences.

What a night. And day... I was hoping for the best too. I'm so sorry for your loss...

I feel deep in my heart you made the best choice. My heart is breaking for you too. I actually just sat and balled my eyes out. I let hubby read while I collected myself and it touched him too.

Prayers and hug2 s for you, and know Ollie is in a better place now.

Glide free Ollie! :rbridge:

Thank you for keeping us updated.

Jen,

I am very sorry for your loss. I know very well what a hard decision it is to help a beloved companion over the bridge.

May you find comfort and peace in your memories of him.

Words seem insufficient. You stood by him & helped him through all of this ordeal. You not only took away his pain, but was there providing comfort & happiness in the end. Enjoy the memories you two made together & know you provided him peace.

Thank you everyone for your kind words. It really means a lot.

My poor little Ollie has had a rough go the last 6 months between losing his brother, his little mouth injury and now this. I appreciate the words of encouragement and advice this board always gives.

I got Suge and Ollie when I was 20 years old, so they grew up with me into adulthood. I always dreaded the day when I would lose them, but I'm grateful to have had a good 12 years.

I thought I'd share my favorite photo of Ollie. I've had this as my cell phone background for probably the last 4 years or so. Every morning, for as long as I can remember, I would wake up and say "Good morning babies!" and Ollie would poke his head out in seconds looking for his AM treat. He even did that in his old age...actually in his old age, any time of day he heard my voice near the pouch he would poke his head up looking for a treat! This photo was from one of those morning, "Where's that treats?" :

Hopefully, the next time I post it will be for something much lighter. <3

It is! I loved her pouches so much.

I've had that puppy pouch for a long time. I used to have a few of hers but my old apartment flooded with sewage, so I had to throw away a few bags of glider things. That pouch was one of the few things that survived. Her legacy lives on. smile

I'm so sorry for your loss. I cried reading through the posts. I'm so afraid of losing my babies one day. They mean so much to me. All different personalities, but all four of them together make something that's complete. It's so hard to think of losing just one. frown
