Morning,
One of my boys has another prolapsed cloaca. I separated him and put a water based gel on his area. I don't know what to do anymore. They have an open water source- please give some suggestions.

I do have left over antibiotics from before.

I am nervous and scared as I am sure he is.

I would not administer the leftover antibiotic. He will have to see a vet asap. I'm going to review our previous conversation and be back.

So looking back at your last post, we recommended open water source.

I will assume you have kept the same.

Are these gliders related? Like maybe brothers?

Does this glider have same symptoms?
Is he straining?

Are they neutered?

I'm asking for others to read. I have no experience, but want to get info gathered.

How is Jake(?) doing?

The glider (Chip) in concern is not related to any other gliders. I am going to the vet.

He is sleeping now, I am hoping the sleeping will let him relax a bit. I put a water based gel on him and he has an open water source.

He is separated for now with an open water source. No body else has symptoms. They did in the past and were all put on antibiotics and did well. They are all neutered.

I haven't seen Chip strain at all.

This is all so scary frown

I have not administered any leftover antibiotics- thank you for the suggestion.

Just an update, Chip has a blocked anal gland- surgery next week. He’s on different antibiotics until then. The vet showed me where and what side he was blocked.

Glad you found out what was going on and that he didn't try to express his anal glands. That makes it 1000 times worse.

Hey what is the name of this vet?
If you can't say it publicly, please PM it to me.

So RARE to find a vet that will actually take a serious look at a suggie--much less be able to do an advanced diagnosis and SURGERY?

I want this person in my Rolladex.

The vet I went to is Dr. Medlin- http://www.scottmedlin.com

I don’t see why I can’t give out his website smile

He gave me more knowledge and explained the procedure as well as the reason for the surgery, he said just antibiotics will only mask the problem.

He also explained post surgery care. The blockage is the size of a lentil.

Update- they canceled surgery at the last minute. They put him under and examined more closely. They said the meds have decreased the blockage significantly and they don’t believe he had an abscess. They prescribed 7 more days of meds 2 times a day a total of 14 days. They explained that the last vet may have not prescribed the proper dosage or long enough. However, if he prolapses again surgery is a matter of fact.

I am so happy right now!!

Thank you all for being there! <3

Chip has done so great with all the meds he’s been on. He’s a champ taking meds as well. So far I have noticed an increase in his activity. I hope this continues.

Thank you! We all had a great New Year! Happy and healthy. This is by far the best group! Great help and quick responses, and support. . I’m sure a lot of you know how frightening it is not to get a response for help, especially on a Sunday or holiday.

I hope you all had the same with your fur babies.

So, unfortunately Chip prolapsed again this morning. Went to the vet, he is sending in a culture to look more closely at bacteria that may be in his anal gland. He said he could have had an infection when he was younger that was not treated properly which may have caused an anal gland to deform.

He was a rescue, I purchased him and his brother from a rescue and know their story.

The vet discussed a possible abnormal anal gland that can have pockets that will not ‘stay’ clear due to pockets. He also discussed surgery as a last resort, which he said would happen if it happened again.
Waiting for a culture to come back. About a week.

Chip has lost grams, which I questioned and I am very concerned about. In August he was 115g, Dec. 110g, Feb. 1 105g.

Long, long story short - the vet suggested a 28 day dosage of meds and possibly chloramphenicol if the culture comes back positive for something. This antibiotic has been used with precaution in exotics with abscesses.

The vet said he did not feel a mass like the last time Chip was in, which is sort of good news, but new questions come up. He also said cancer does not seem probable at this time- the weight loss seems to point to the infection and Chip is noticing he’s not feeling well.

I received a lot of info again, and different approaches, surgery as a last resort. Thank goodness!

I’m out of ideas and I just want him to gain grams and feel better. 😕💔

Has anyone had this problem before?? Or something similar? Any ideas or suggestions would be helpful .

Thank you!!
