I am a new breeder saving up money for my first breeding pair. I originally thought "how cool would it be to have a leucistic and black beauty pair?? The mom would either have a super light baby or a super dark baby! What a nice contrast that would be!"

I was told this is not the case. If I breed a leucistic and a black beauty, slowly but surely the joeys will begin to lighten up and lose their black beauty characteristics if they are indeed a black beauty joey.

Is this true??

I can't help you with that, I will see if I can get someone to come answer your question.

Ally,

Go on Facebook to the group: Glider Breeding 101 and make a post and tag Diane Robertson.

She is your best bet for an answer.

Is there an email to contact her rather than Facebook? I do not have one but plan on acquiring one more around the time when I do begin breeding and joeys come into my life.

I PM'd Diane and here is what she said -
Quote:
A single leu recessive gene will lighten the color and make the stripe narrow. Lose that one gene with next pairing and they will be dark again.
The best BBs have 2 BB genes and no other color recessives.

Thank you so much~this really does mean a lot that you are trying to help me with my breeding career.

So this is what I'm understanding from what she has typed:
"If you breed a BB to a Leu, and a baby gets a 1 Leu gene, they will indeed be lighter. If it does not, it will remain a darker baby."

There is a CHANCE they can come out lighter but it won't mess up the coloring every pair of babies, correct? They won't get progressively lighter and lighter? Also, if I bred a BB and Leu is there a chance that the babies can even become the Leu coloring?

Every joey has about a 50% chance of carrying the leu gene which may in turn make the joey lighter not all het joeys will show het coloring so you may get a BB 100% leu het. Not all of them, and no they won't get lighter with time. If you breed a BB and a leu you will not get leus unless the BB is also 100% leu het- meaning it carries the leu gene. Also, not every joey from even a BB pairing will be BB. I currently have a BFBB/BB pairing and they just threw a classic grey joey. Nothing is set in stone. A lot of breeding gliders is educated guesses and predicting patterns based on what the parent's lineage tells you.

Thank you for the information! I am very much new to the breeding scene and and trying my hardest to learn up on genes and hets and such. I'm not going to lie that this completely confuses me but with time I know I'll get it!
