Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this.

I had a pair of sugargliders, but one of them passed away two days ago. Now, I have a single 14yr old male who is blind. He finally started eating again, before he was so depressed he wouldn't even taste his favorite treats. However, now he only sleeps, nibbles on his food, and runs. He doesn't want to leave his cage or even the pouch for the most part. The first day after Princess died he wouldn't leave me at all. What can I do for him? Would trying to find another senior glider be good for him? I don't know if he's too old to accept another, or if there is such a thing as too old in the glider world.

14 years old!!! Wow!!!

I'm so sorry for your loss of the other glider. hug2

I'm not familiar with older gliders, so I can't help you. But there are others here who can.

Thanks for joining, and try to keep him company as much as possible. It will help him to know you are there.

Please keep us posted too!

You may want to find him two older buddies as it will be hard to find another exactly his age.

You don't want to shake his world up to much, big changes are very hard on older gliders.

Very sorry for your loss.

Where can I find older gliders? I live in Central Texas, and it seems as though the glider rescue closed last year.

Sorry for your loss.

Have you checked classifieds? It check with some breeders, they may have some retired pairs that are a little older.

Without details on the relationship between Princess and your sweet old man,
I would guess she was his eyes as we have seen that relationship in many sightless gliders and their cage mates.

As suggested, getting a pair of mature gliders would probably work best in hopes they would accept him and more importantly, he would accept them. I personally would suggest a pair of females to get that mothering gene to kick in for him.

Gliders at fourteen years are unpredictable in whether or not he would accept another. How long had he and Princess been together? Any background information would help us advise you better.

Kim/Feather has given you some great links for finding some older/mature gliders. Cora would be a wonderful source and person to help.

Thank you so much, everyone. He and Princess had been together for 9 years. He lost his eyesight earlier this year. Since he knows where everything is in his cage, I make sure to keep everything in the exact place unless he moves it. With food, Princess would tap him to let him know if I had put out a treat while he was sleeping. She definitely was the dominant one of the pair even though he was two years older and bigger than she was.

What a precious relationship. It made me sad when I read that he lost his cage mate. Good luck with finding him new companions.

Seeing as your in TX, I would contact Priscilla and see if she has two retired females that are close to his age. That would be perfect.
