Hy! I have a breeding trio two females and a male. I had done lots of research on breeding sugar gliders but never thought to research breeding trios until recently I researched and found that sometimes the females could steal each others joeys. One of the females in my trio has one joey that is a little older than 4 weeks old and the other just gave birth to joeys on January 10th (I saw her in labor). The females were introduced to each other when the older one was 6 months old and the younger 3 months old. They have been together for about 7 months now and I introduced the male to them about 3 months ago. I do not want to separate them so I was wondering if there was anything other that I could do. I was thinking about putting one of the females in a separate cage during the night but letting them sleep together during the day or something like that. How long would I need to keep the females apart from each other? I read somewhere on another forum that someone would separate the female with joeys from the other females until the joeys were the size of the grape. Would that work?

Separating them at this time would stress out the mothers. I have no experience with breeding trios.

Most breeders do not recommend setting up a trio unless the girls are same batch siblings.

Hopefully someone with more experience will see this post.

I agree with Feather about not putting any stress on either of the mothers.

IMO, your best option since the girls are pretty bonded at this point is to see what happens. Could be you will have a happy trio with both females helping with raising once all joeys are weaned.

Please keep us updated.

Today I noticed one of them was sticking their head near the other's pouch while she was cleaning the pouch. They didn't crab at each other. Was she trying to steal a joey or thinking about stealing a joey?

She may have been helping to clean the joeys, you will see dad trying that too.

Don't panic or assume there is joey snatching happening when you see the females close to each other. You may find both females helping to raise all the joeys once they are OOP since they are cage mates.

You will see this all the time in family units. It's wonderful to watch.
