My little baby Gus is sick. He is a little over 3 months old. I've had him for a little more than 1 month. He was doing great eating his whole dish every night, very active, and already bonded to me. He was neutered 2 weeks ago and the incision is all healed. Friday night he did not eat overnight and was sleeping in his pouch every time I checked on him. Will still eat treats and cherry if hand fed. Same story Saturday night so I took him to Emergency exotic vet yesterday and everything was normal on physical exam. He is urinating and passing normal stool. Had fecal checked and all negative. They gave me critical care omnivore to force feed him 3 times a day and if still not eating in a few days should be sedated for bloodwork and xrays. Has anyone seen anything like this in a young seemingly healthy glider???

When they did fecal, what all did they test for?

Have you done tent test to see if he's dehydrated?

Is he having any issues with going potty/poo, or has he stopped going, now that he isn't eating?

Be careful about administering food. Make sure to let him swallow, and not put down his throat. Issues with getting liquids in lungs. Place syringe in side of mouth not straight on.

Be sure to offer fruits with high liquid content like watermelon.

The fecal tested for parasites and giardia. All negative. They said he was not dehydrated. Urine and stools are normal. No straining. He won't take watermelon but is eating some cherry. I am being careful with the feeding and he is swallowing small amounts at a time.

You can give him grapes cut in half and try Avocado, most gliders love Avocado.

At this point offer him anything he will eat, chicken, turkey, scrambled eggs. The important thing is for him to eat and drink.

Gus eating a few more things but only if hand fed. Started to have trouble walking so back to the vet yesterday. They thought he looked a little pale and trouble walking due to weakness. His weight was stable. Sedated for bloodwork and ultrasound . Ultrasound non remarkable and bloodwork normal except slight increase in globulins. Started 2 different antibiotics but still unsure of underlying problem???

Took Gus to another vet for another opinion. She could not find anything wrong on physical exam. He is maintaining weight but looks worse. Doesn't leave the pouch at all now. She said continue antibiotics, gave him more Sub Q and vitamin B, also a few days of metacam in case it is a pain issue. Has anyone ever seen anything like this in a young glider? I feel like I am going to lose him.

Is he a single glider? Could he be depressed? Did you get him from a breeder? If so, have you contacted them?

I have read through this post and I see you have had gliders either for awhile or at one time. I feel like I'm missing something. I'm sorry I'm not much help.

The breeder has both parents who are very healthy. Also previous babies from these parents are fine. I have 2 other gliders but they are not housed together yet because he was just neutered a few weeks ago. I have moved their cages closer ( About 6 inches apart) and they see each other and had been barking back and forth before he was sick. The vets dont want them together now because they dont know what is wrong with him. (I was going to let them meet 1 at a time in neutral territory this past weekend but then he got sick).

I think one important factor you state is "he is maintaining wieght" this is important, you should weight him maybe every day to hope this trend continues, and if you dont want to disturb him to much, you can weight him in sleeping pouch.
Getting a second vet opinion was a great idea.

Wish I had more, but is does sound like you are doing every thing you can for him. keep hand feeding if needed.

as a side note, my vet(who seems very good and experienced) said sometime the fecal test can be hit and miss, not every stool will contain parasites. but it sounds like he is going potty normal.

He is passing formed stool and we ran the fecal test twice. The vet also checked the stool under microscope herself.

I'm sorry to hear this. I also may be missing something, maybe I should've gone through everything in this thread before asking, but honestly, I'm too tired to absorb every detail right now. I feel like this could be a legit question based on what I have absorbed, especially with the most recent posts. So here it goes...

Basically, I was wondering: Do you think it's possible that he's not sick, since all tests and exams results are normal, that it's possibly stress from the presence of the other glider?

Stress could cause him to not eat and want to stay in his pouch, being afraid or too stressed to come out and behave normally.

I recommend looking into this possibility and try moving the cages into separate rooms. Keep some distance between them for a while and see if he returns to normal. It wouldn't hurt to ask the experienced vet about this possibility as well. I'm wondering of other's thoughts.

If this is the case, you may want to wait till he's a little older, bigger, and back to his normal behavior, then start again with pre-introduction procedures, taking it slow.

In a nutshell, here is what I think we are looking at with Little Gus. Is it possible he is simply lonely Was the neutering at three months plus the move to his new home just a little more than the little fellow could handle on top of being alone? Maybe that is all it is dunno

  • He is a little over 3 months old. I've had him for a little more than 1 month. He was doing great eating his whole dish every night, very active, and already bonded to me. He was neutered 2 weeks ago and the incision is all healed.
  • Friday night he did not eat overnight and was sleeping in his pouch every time I checked on him. Will still eat treats and cherry if hand fed.
  • Same story Saturday night
  • Seem by two vets with normal/unremarkable visits
  • Started antibiotics as precaution
  • Gus's cage moved close to pair. Some vocalization.
  • Still no improvement

Karen,
I thought that might be the problem so I let him see Gwen last night. On neutral territory feeding both of them treats. He saw Gwen and he started little squeaking noises and tried to rub on her and she tried to attack him. I had a hold of her but she managed to bite the loose skin on his back leg. No damage but that did not go at all well. cry I have been gradually moving the cages closer and switching their blankets and pouches with each other. They are also carried in separate bonding pouches right next to each other.

I would try introductions in the morning when they want to go to bed.

Try one of your other gliders first the next time you try introductions.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Gwen is the calmer glider. The other glider is a male(neutered) but much more aggressive. I still think there is an underlying problem because he can hardly walk now. I'm still force feeding the critical care food and he'll eat very small amounts of food hand fed to him. He has not lost any weight but is much weaker. It almost seems like an injury (which no one could find on exam) or neurological? I don't know what else to do. He is so sweet it is heartbreaking.

I had this same thought also, the fact that he is not losing weight seemed kind of odd for a glider that is sick for several days. maybe he is not sick, but so far everything you have done has been a good precaution.

my wife is the king of introductions. I sit behind her as a nervous nelly. at every little spat I want it ended, so noone gets hurt, but she just knows its ok and we keep going, after a few feeling out spats they usually settle down and are sleeping in a pouch together.
This last time we noticed that connor was picking the sleeping pouch scented with the 4 colony, not the other unscented one. and the 4 colony was picking the one scented with connor. after 2 weeks of this I came home from work and my wife had all 5 sleeping in one pouch.

treats my give her something to protect against a strange glider, I don't think my wife has treats during an introduction.

This is indeed beyond perplexing at this point.

Almost sounds like HLP and if it is, he should be loosing weight, but he is not. I don't see how he is maintaining his weight at this point.

I do agree, there has to be something going on he is hiding from everyone including the vets.

I don't know much about anything, but there's a saying somewhere that says if there is only one possibility left out of all possibilities then it must be the one. The weight thing keeps coming up, I would check the scale or use a different one just to rule it out.

Has he had X-rays?

Maybe he has a over growth of bacteria in his gut. A Culture and Sensitivity of his stool and swab inside of his cloaca could rule that out.

What kind of cage is he in?

As for the scale. He was weighed at 3 different vets and weights are all about the same as what I get at home. He did not have xrays but had an ultrasound ( vet said this would give us better info than an xray) which showed the intestines. He is on metronidazole(an intestinal antibiotic) and SMZ antibiotic.

I am just worried, I had a glider on that several years ago and almost lost her, I was force feeding and subQing her for a week before she turned around.

What type of cage do you have him in?

It's a wire cage 1/2 x 1 inch that I've had for at least 10 years and 3 other gliders lived in it for a period of time with no health issues. He finished the metronidazole yesterday. Went back to the vet today. Got a calcium injection and some sub Q fluids. Will do xray tomorrow.

I just wanted to rule out the toxic coated wire, that is why I asked about his cage.

I hope you can get to the bottom of this soon. Waiting anxiously for the results of the e-ray.

He is getting worse. Xrays were nonremarkable but started him on calcium Thursday just to be on the safe side. No sign of improvement. Now he will hardly eat anything I am handfeeding him. Still forcefeeding him critical care and HPW. Same weight but looks so thin.

I am so very sorry to hear this. I am sure I am not the only one who is so confused by the fact he is holding his weight.Just makes no sense whatsoever.

Was so hoping there would be a better report.

I still have a concern about the breeder. Gus is how old?

You have had him 5 maybe 6 weeks? Could he have physical defects internally? Maybe something isn't developing properly?

Even though the parents are healthy and other joeys were healthy, there could be internal underdevelopment. It would be interesting to know if other owners ever had issues.

So, here's my thought. Bear with me, I'm just trying to eliminate some things:

1. What do you use to clean cages?

2. What diet did you feed him before he got sick?

3. Did or does he get treats, if so, what was he fed?

4. Has your home been recently sprayed for pests? Do you use poisons for mice, ants, etc?

5. Do you use an air humidifier or purifier? If so, does it have an ionic setting?

6. Do you burn candles, use deodorizers?

7. Has he been exposed to any aerosols, like hairspray, deodorant, or perfume?

8. Has he ever been loose and had contact with anything that may be toxic?

9. Is his cage PVC coated?

10. Where is his cage located compared to the enviroment in the house. Air vents, fans, heat source? Could he be exposed to carbon monoxide from a gas hot water heater?

Remember he is a joey. He is more sensitive to everything than adults are.

Dawn,
1. I clean his cage with warm water and washcloth only. Do occasionally steam clean.
2. His diet was HPW and fruits and vegetables.
3. Treats were yogurt drops and white meat chicken.
4. I don't spray any chemicals for bugs inside or outside of the house. No ant traps.
5. I don't use a humidifier or air purifier.
6. I don't burn candles or use any room deodorizers.
7. He has never been exposed to hairspray, deodorant, etc.
8. He has never been loose from the cage except with me.
9. The cage he is in has housed all my baby gliders through the years and one glider even lived in it her whole life with no ill effects.
10. He is not by any vents and I have 2 carbon monoxide detectors(1 by his room)

Ok, well, now I'm really stuck...

I am so happy with your answers!!!!! You are a good momma. I had to ask only because I felt we were missing something.

I hope I didn't upset you. I'm trying to eliminate as much as possible.

I'm guessing he's still the same? Poo and potty OK?

Because of Gus's age and the length of time you have had him, there is probably only one thing we have not considered.

You have not mentioned who the breeder is you got Gus from, and you are under no obligation to do so.

Just because previous joeys are fine from Gus's parents does not mean that he is. He could very well have been ill when you received him, and the breeder was not aware. It could also be something neurological the vet was not able to diagnosis.

The fact he was weak and showed signs of being unable to walk so very early makes me think more along neurological lines rather than something else since all tested normal.

As Kim/Feather suggested, a video would tell us quite a bit IF he is able to walk at all.

My vet has considered it might be a genetic problem. As a last ditch effort we started steroids yesterday. I thought his walking was a little stronger yesterday but I was hoping the steroids would make him want to eat. So far he still won't eat on his own. I will try to get a video.

Sorry I can't attach the video. After 2 doses of steroids his walking is much improved. He still doesn't leave the pouch and still not eating on his own. Also started baytril to see if that will help.

Feather I did email you a short video but I'm not sure if it went through. A quick update on Gus. He is still on calcium, steroids, and Baytril. He can walk now but his gait is not totally normal. He still seems a little neurological. He seems a little more alert. Yesterday for the first time in 2 weeks he ate a little food I hand fed him ( a small piece of apple, a piece of corn and later some egg and watermelon). He still will not leave the pouch or groom himself. He seems starving when he starts to eat but stops after a few bites. Theresa

I got the video and it looks like either HLP or Neurological.

I wonder if he could have hurt himself in his wheel a while back.

Hopefully the regime he is on will help him.

He is in my thoughts and prayers every day. Keep us posted on him.

Gus is showing some improvement!!!! He can walk normal and climb the sides of the cage. He actually left his sleeping pouch twice to move to a different pouch. He will now eat some applesauce, yogurt, egg and other items that I handfeed him. For the first time in a month he gained 3 grams!!! Thanks for all the thoughts and prayers. I hope we're on the upswing now! Theresa

Gus had a recheck at the vet today and she was very happy with his improvement! Still won't eat on his own but gained 4 more grams! Is more active and very alert. He has started to groom himself a little. She wants me to reduce the steroid a little and see if he still continues to improve.

Another update on Gus. He is still on steroids and calcium but he is doing much better. He has started to play a little and is using his wheel for a little bit each night. I'm only force feeding him once a day and he has even started to eat a very small amount on his own. He does eat a decent amount and more variety when I hand feed him. He has gained another gram! jump

That is just too adorable. Now who doesn't love the beach. My family used to go to Ocean City, MD when we were younger. Loved it.

Gus was off all meds and 100% normal for 2 1/2 months. He was super active, eating well and gaining weight. Last Wednesday morning when I went in to check on him he was totally neurological out of nowhere!!!! Constant head tremors, shaking, spastic movements. Went to local vet. Started back on calcium, Steroids, and antibiotic. Went to a second vet a few days later started another antibiotic. Went to exotic vet at Red Bank and started on another medication in case it is infectious like toxoplasmosis.Bloodwork showed an elevated liver enzyme (possibly from steroids) and a really low neutrophil count. A few days after starting the first round of meds the tremors have almost stopped but he is only eating what I hand feed him. Then since Monday he is blind. He is active and will eat some things for me but does not eat on his own (does know where the food dish is). I am force feeding HPW and he is maintaining his weight. He had really bad diarrhea from all the meds but now stools are more formed. It's horrible not knowing what the underlying problem is. Theresa

I am sorry to hear that your going though this again. I hope that you and your vets can get to the bottom of this quickly. Poor little Guz, sending prayers.

I am wondering what type cage he is housed in. Is it possible it is an environmental issue?

He's in a cage that another glider lived in for 7 years with no health issues. Grinch and Gwen who I have now also lived in this cage for a few months when they were babies without any problems.

Gus is still not eating on his own but will eat when hand fed. He finished the 1 antibiotic yesterday and will be done with another one tomorrow. Hopefully his appetite picks up after that. He's still blind but much more active and all the neurological signs have lessened. Fecal antigen elisa for cryptosporidium is still pending.

Just giving an update on Gus. He is 10 months old now. He has finished all his antibiotics and his meds for possible toxo. I am slowly weaning him off the steroids. He is still a little neurological and still blind. worried He eats really well on his own, is gaining weight and is very active and playful. He would constantly bark and try to get to the other two gliders but they would attack him any time they got near him. For Christmas he got a new friend Cara who accepts him and he is crazy about her. mlove He is much calmer and more settled now. I hope he continues to improve. Merry Christmas everyone. :santa: Theresa

jump Thanks for the update Theresa, I saw you posted and my heart just sank. I am glad that he is doing better.

I have a blind glider, he is in with a bunch of geriatric gliders and they take really good care of him.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

So glad to read your post and see that Sweet Gus has a friend who will be his buddy. I think you will find she will take good care of him and will make his life much easier.

Thanks so much for the sweet picture of the two of them. Look forward to many more pictures.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Just another update on Gus. Yesterday was his birthday bday :party2: He is 1 year old now. He is doing great! He is off of all meds for about 1 month. Still a little neurological and is still blind but he is very active, eats great (gained a lot of weight), and is very loving. He adores his friend Cara mlove
