Recently my glider's feces have been really strong. I can't describe the odor, but it's a bit more potent than I think it normally is. The wheel smells like it too, but it is an older wheel so it's to be expected. I would love just some extra opinions. It's difficult not to be too careful about your exotic pets and I want to make sure I'm doing the right thing for them. I would like to avoid any veterinary trips if possible, given how expensive they are, but I'm hoping they don't have any digestive infections or anything serious.
For glider owners who have had digestive issues, your responses would definitely be appreciated too. Thank you~

Which diet are they on? How long on that diet?

Have you changed the fruits or vegetables you feed lately?

They are on the SGS2 diet and they've been on it for a year or so with no issues! I haven't changed the fruits and vegitables, aside from a bit of green beans.

I don't know much about that diet. I would recommend a vet visit with a fecal and test for Giardia.

I agree with Feather.

I'm not familiar with the SGS2 diet either. I considered trying about 6 years ago, and I can't recall why, but I'm sure there was a good reason.

EDIT: I did look up the recipe and I know now why I never fed it. In the amber food group, there are many citrus fruits suggested. Even though f/ v from the amber group should only make up 20%, the acid in the citrus can cause stomach irritations
and other issues. The creator claims this diet is closest to what gliders would eat in the wild. This is untrue. Gliders only live about 6 years in the wild. Captive gliders can live up to twice as long or longer.

The creator didn't take in to account that these little beasts are opportunity feeders in the wild. They eat what they can find, and their diet can change with the seasons. They also haven't taken in to account for seasonal and environmental changes, drought, food shortages, etc in the wild. End of EDIT.

If the feces has changed color(when fresh) or consistency, or urine has darkened, a vet check is in order. Be sure to let them know you feed bee pollen as well.

When it comes to vet checks and tests, it's better to be safe than sorry. Always remember gliders hide their illness until its almost too late.

You could also consider any current food recalls in your area, if you have added a different treat(or increased treats). The vet will want to know as well.
