Hi I'm Peanuts. I'm from Lumberton,nj. I've been thinking about getting a sugar glider for awhile now. But I have a cat I won't part with. So I'm at a stand still right now.

Hi and :welcomegc:

Sugar gliders are colony animals and should be adopted in pairs.

Many people do have cats. However there are precautions to consider.
* First it would be ideal to keep the gliders in a room with a door the cat can't get into.
*Keep in mind that a cats saliva has a lot of bacteria in it and if the cats were to bite the glider it could kill them.
*You may know your cat as a pet and feel their temperament is sweet. But they are predators and may consider a glider as something to hunt and a snack.

I'm drawing a blank, but know there are a few more precautions. Also keep in mind the best intension or plan can can go wrong.

Do some research to make sure gliders are a good fit for you. Their lifespan can be up to 12- 16 years. Make sure you are willing to commit for that length of time.

A big enough and safe cage (12/" or less bar spacing) is important as well as a healthy proven diet ,a glider safe wheels , and safe sleeping pouch. Find an exotic vet that is qualified on sugar gliders. Safe enrichment toys are also important too.

Hi yes the cage I would have to figure out where in my room it would go. The only available place right now is near a window and I don't want to freeze the poor thing..I can definitely move things around to accommodate the cage though if I don't get the biggest cage. The only thing holding me up is the cat who I love dearly and is very bonded to me.. Otherwise getting th age and toys food and such is no problem.

Hi Peanuts,

Please register so that you can take full use of the board and subforums.

We have three cats in the house. We just make sure that they get locked up if we have an prison break. I also have 3 parrots and a hamster.

Hi yes I hope the registration went through. I learned a lot about sugars gliders this morning on this site. Thank goodness for this informative friendly place. I found a beautiful animal hospital in MT Laurel that takes exotics and they see the Bi anniually. Now I have to think about where I would get a glider. I'm not too keen on a rescue one even though my cat was a rescue as at one yrs old. I'm afraid they may be hard to bond. A baby would be a better fit for me I think. I like the white ones and the natural colored ones. I would get the cage and the accessories first and food but still have to investigate that.

Try again, what email are you using? Sometimes it is fussy about emails.

I had a cat and my sugar glider for years together, and there was no problem at all. (My cat passed on in 2020 from old age.) Since sugar gliders are marsupials, both cats and dogs smell their musk and most run away as fast as they can! I read a lot of stories documenting this from owners of both cats and dogs, long before I got my own sugar glider.

Sugar gliders' smell deters them. You'll smell it too!

My cat was curious about new things, but never came close to my sugar glider Digit, even when I held him in my hand and put them close together. When I put Digit near her and she was too old and lazy to move, she would turn her head the other way. Digit got out of his cage a few times, and there was never any problem between them.

I don't think there's any danger there. Digit and my sweet cat lived together for years.

Hi, can a sugar glider baby be in a bird cage, the bars are close together and if I remove the perches.I'd have more room for toys and hammocks and a wheel.

Peanuts

That is probably because I sent you a temp password less than 24 hours ago which I believe must be used first.
When you log in, first enter your log in which is Peanuts, then enter the 1st temp password, then enter. IF 24 hrs has passed since I sent you that first temp password, then you will need to use the one Feather sent you.
