Female Scent Gland or Something Else?? #143012

I have noticed that my females like to rub their shoulders on things. Especially after I clean. They will just rub their little shoulder along the cage. I assume they are marking. They seem to mainly use the right shoulder. Well, I cleaned the cage yesterday. Tonight I picked Storm up and noticed that in the area where she rubs the hair is shorter than everywhere else. There is no sign of a scab or anything, but the hair looked really short. I have never noticed it like this before but I did pick her up after she went on a major marking spree judging by the smell of things.
So, is this where her scent gland is?
Is it normal for the hair to be shorter there (kinda like where the males are bald)?
Could she maybe have pulled some hair out by marking the cage last night (which both the females and males love to do after I clean...I can smell their scent).
Or, is there no gland there and is something wrong with my babies skin?
Any input is greatly appreciated (sorry for so many questions).

Females and males do mark in the manner you described, similar to how a cat does. But I have not noticed any loss or thining of fur on my female.

Is there something in the cage that could have caused this? Like a rough area.

Keep an eye on her and whatch the skin for any aggreviation, if you see it getting any worse it is worth a vet visit.

On some females it is more noticable - but with my girls that have nuetered malesit is more prominent to see a small chest scent gland - not as big as a males. You can also see some scent markings around the pouch area at times. As for your girl can you get a pic of the short hair? Can you maybe try a more detailed discription? (Like is it one side or more in the middle or did it clear up after a good grooming?)

Currently, I have a glider ratio of 6 females (Myst, Lyah, Troi, Hush, Clotho, and Roxy), and 4 males (Riker, Teal'c, Chronos, and Binx)...and yes, the females will mark. I have never seen an identifiable scent gland on a healthy female. Nor should the hair be shorter unless they are marking WAY too much. There could be a reason....

Question: Do you clean your pouches and toys at the same time as the cage?

If so, and nothing in there still smells like them, they could be overmarking like crazy. To avoid that, alternate cleaning days. Like clean the pouches/toys a few days before the cage, so when the cage is done, it still smells a little like them when the pouches/toys are put back in the clean cage.

If not, there could be another stressor at work...and you'll need to figure out what. But yes, she could be simply rubbing it off by overmarking.

<img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/roflmao.gif" alt="" /> I call this behavior the "Kitty Cat" - My Zoe made it famous in my house, she is a VERY aggressive marker! I agree with Jen, if alternating your cleaning schedule doesn't help, you need to look for another stressor. Just a hunch, but how old is Storm?

Hi again!
First, I cleaned the toys the day before I cleaned the cage bars and the bedding, but I didn't clean the pouch. So she still had pleanty of her smelly stuff in there I think.

As for where it is at, it is over her left shoulder, the same area I always see her rubbing. I looked at it and there is no mark on her skin or anything. The hair is just really really short. It is kinda big, almost an inch long. i am gonna try and get her to stay still long enough for a picture.

Storm is probably about two years old now. When I got her the pet store lady said she was still very young like 6 months, but she had two joeys in pouch! (which I didn't find out until she decided to kill them a few weeks later because she didn't have a mate anymore. I was sooo ticked off).
Anyway, she now lives with one female who is about 4 months younger than her and a nueterd male who is almost a year.

Ok, here are picutres. Sorry if the last one is fuzzy, but it kinda shows how long it is because it is hard to see unless you spread the surrinding fur out. BTW: I love the thrid pic! She is all like "Mom! What are you doing! You didn't really bring me out here for worms did you?!"

Okay...not what I pictured. That doesn't look like it's from rubbing...that looks like overgrooming (the hair being pulled out with teeth). Either she or another glider may be overgrooming that area. Some things to consider:

Even a neutered male can still have the mating instinct. Squabbles can happen even between cagemates who get along well.

It's possible one of her cagemates teeth went thru the skin. If an infection started, she could be overgrooming. That will not show up in standard tests (urinalysis/fecals). My recommendation would be to schedule a vet visit, with an eye to possible infection and a broad spectrum antibiotic to treat for the possibility. That isn't a normal area for stress related overgrooming, and the contrast is too sharp for her to be rubbing it off.

Let us know how she's doing.

This was so long a go I realized I forgot to update it!
Storm is just fine. She had no infection or anything. She was just rubbing on the side of her cage a lot. She had no cuts or scratches, just hair missing. Either way, I am glad I took her to the vet and that I know for sure she is ok. Hope that his post can help someone else out some day.
