I have owned gliders for nine years now, but have kinda been on and off the forum a lot. I started using happy glider diet a year or so ago. I have used the BML diet, but hate the mess and stuff that goes along with it. Mine sometimes liked to use it to paint when they got bored. So at that point I switched to happy glider. I have never had any problems with it at all. So i figured to see some info on it when i jumped back on the forums, but i havn't seen many post or anything about it. So i was just wondering whats up?

I've never heard of happy glider. Is it a staple type (pellets)?

I would imagine that the majority don't feed commercial diets. There are conflicting views on the use of a hard pellet type food.

I got a sample of the Happy Glider food at the SGGA and out of curiosity soaked 4 pieces to see if they'd eat it, neither of my gliders touched it

But I'm sure someone who does feed it will be along with their experiences soon

Before I got my gliders I was researching breeders and spoke to one who uses Happy Glider and also sells the products. Her gliders all seemed very healthy on that diet but I had other concerns about her practices and decided not to adopt from her.

I researched a bunch of the pellet diets available but decided not to go with Happy Glider because the first ingredient is corn. I ended up going with a different hard pellet diet with an ingredient list I really liked.

I can't feed BML because one of my boys hates honey but I've found Darcy's diet to be super easy. All I have to do is open up a bottle of Ensure, add a bit of calcium powder, shake it up, pour a couple tablespoons of it in a bowl for my gliders, and then store the rest in the fridge. I also give a varied mix of fruits, veggies, and protien with the Ensure plus I leave out a bowl of pellets (not soaked or softened) during the day. As an added bonus, my gliders and their cage stay very clean with Darcy's diet.

I've never used Happy Glider. Here's a good post you might find helpful: Pet-Pro Happy Glider food. The thing to remember is that it's not a complete diet in itself, but needs protein, fruits, and veggies.

Although it's not technically "lumpy jaw," unless the hard pellets are softened, there is the risk of getting pieces in between the gums and teeth, or their gums getting scraped or scratched, and an infection can occur. The jaw can become swollen or "lumpy."

I feed BML, and the thing I like most about it is that the guesswork is removed as far as how much vitamins and calcium to use. I do put all of my food (including the fruits and veggies) in "glider kitchens" to help contain the mess. Here are some links with a variety of ideas, in case you're interested.

The SunCoast diet uses a soft pelleted food. No soaking required.

I feed pellets and have since the day I got my gliders with no signs of mouth sores or abscesses in all that time. The pellets are firm but break/crumble apart when I pinch them between my fingers. I have never understood why feeding pellets would be more likely to cause lumpy jaw than feeding the crunchy and sharp exoskeletons of insects or giving your gliders tree branches to gnaw on.

If it hurts the glider, then he/she simply won't eat it. The main thing that is left out with typical hard staple food is once it becomes moist...it is smashed to the top of the gliders mouth. This point forward, it is no different from any other soft food. I think the most missed point about gliders is their native habits. They chew bark, they eat insects, they even eat feeder mice. The bottom line is that gliders need vitamins...just as humans do. If the staple food supplies a lot of vitamins, then it serves it's purpose. You cannot simply say "This is all they need to live" because you wouldn't want your parents feeding you moosh all of your life simply because it was full of vitamins. I personally feed my glider pretty pets glider food, and he loves it. I think all owners/friends of gliders should experiment with different foods until the glider finds the one he wants.

I left out that I DO feed my glider BML sometimes. He's picky about it, and usually doesn't want it. I support all diets that promote health, and will allow your buddy to be very healthy thoughout the friendship of them and their owner.

i use the happy glider 24/7 in their cage the breeders mix and they are not breeders. they like this the best. i leave it hard its good for their teeth. and they crunch it up no problem. im in contact with aussie vets and they beleive gliders need hard food they are prone to dental disease without branches for their teeth. whuch we dont have access too. the hard food is a good alternative i also use exotic nutrition. along with bml fruit veggies daily.

I have Happy Glider in my cages during the day, but I also feed a proven diet to them at night. I only recommend Happy Glider as a day time snack for gliders. I have been feeding Happy Glider to my gliders for 3 years now without any signs of lumpy jaw.
